Tsitsipas has been the toughest opponent on clay courts in 2021, having not dropped a set on the court surface this year, and recording an 8-0 record so far. Sinner continues to impress this week with two major upsets, beating Roberto Bautista-Agut and Andrey Rublev.

The Greek star entered the tournament with +800 odds to win outright, just behind Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev.

Can Sinner Continue to Upset?

The 19-year old upset World No. 7 Andrey Rublev in just over an hour and a half, defeating the third seed 6-2, 7-6(6). Rublev had entered the match as one of the top players currently on tournament, with a 26-5 record.

The Italian recorded 20 winners, with only landing 50 percent on his first serves. He went down 0/40 at 5-5 in the second set, before seeing three break points at 5-5. He was unable to convert any of them. But he managed to save one set point at 5-6 in the second set tie-break. Sinner continue to push Rublev to his backhand, where he committed eight of his 12 unforced errors from.

Sinner, who made his Barcelona debut this week, now becomes the youngest semifinalist at the Barcelona Open since 2005, when 18-year old Nadal won his first title. He heads into his semifinal match against Tsitsipas with a 18-6 record on the year.

Tsitsipas Remains Undefeated on Clay

With his win against Felix Auger-Aliassime, Tsitsipas has now won 14 sets in a row, and has extended his winning streak to eight in a row, continuing to be undefeated on clay in 2021. Tsitsipas once again outplayed his opponent to beat the Canadian 6-3, 6-3 in just under an hour and a half.

The 22-year old landed 67 percent of his first serves, and recorded a 78 win percentage when getting that first serve in,  only losing seven of his first service points. With only nine unforced errors and 11 winners, he outplayed Auger-Aliassime from start to finish.

The Monte-Carlo Masters winner is now 25-5 on the season, as he continues his hunt for his first ATP Tour 500 title.

Head-to-Head

These two players have only ever seen each other on an outdoor clay court. Their two previous meetings have come at the ATP Masters 1000 Rome in the Round of 32. Tsitsipas won their first meeting in 2019, and Sinner won their most recent last year in 2020, which went three sets.

Tsitsipas has been on another level this year when it comes to playing on clay. He entered this tournament coming off a title win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and he’s looking to go 2-0 at clay court tournaments.

Best Bet

Tsitsipas will have to lose eventually, but I don’t think it’ll be this match. He’s playing too well against his opponents, and although he’s barely been tested this week, I still believe he still has the slight edge. Sinner has had an incredible run this week against higher seeded opponents, but his two previous matches were still hard fought battles.

I expect that Tsitsipas’ confidence is higher than ever, and he’ll enter the semifinals looking to take control early on, as he’s done in his previous matches. You can argue that Sinner will be one of his tougher opponents that he’s seen on clay this year, but I still don’t the Italian has enough to take the match from Tsitsipas.

The Pick: Tsitsipas (-195) OR Tsitsipas 2-0 (+138)
