Pliskova Eases into the Semifinals

Pliskova earned a spot in her second straight WTA 1000 semifinal on Friday, where her quarterfinal opponent, Paula Badosa retired at 2-0 in the second set due to injury.

On paper we see that Pliskova has yet to drop a set all tournament, but she’s had to fight her way back after finding herself down a few games in a couple different scenarios.

The World No. 4 was finally able to beat Jessica Pegula in the Round of 16, after having an 0-4 record against the American. But it was there that she found herself down 1-4 in the first set, and 0-5 in the second. The same thing happened against Badosa before she retired. She came back from being down 0-4 in the first set before winning 7-5.

Heading into this semifinal match, she might have to find a way to come out stronger earlier, as Teichmann has been able to throw off Osaka and most recently Belinda Bencic.

Teichmann Continue to Upset

Just a couple of days ago all eyes were on Osaka as she took the court to face Teichmann in the third round. But quickly Teichmann had all eyes on her, as she went on to defeat her 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. She then found herself up against another seeded player in Bencic, but easily defeated her 6-3, 6-2, to earn her spot in the final four.

On of the biggest parts of the 24-year old’s game is her variety throughout the match, and that has been on full display this week. Against Osaka she recorded 21 winners to Osaka’s 17, and fired off two more aces than her opponent with eight.

In her quarterfinal match against Bencic, she found her down 0-40 in the first game, but she was able to rely on her serve here, that resulted in six straight serves that Bencic could not return.

Pliskova will be another tough challenger for the Swiss, but she has everything she needs to secure the win, it’s just whether or not she’s able to execute them.

Head-to-Head

These two have never played each other on tour before, having a 0-0 head-to-head record.

Best Bet

It seems that Pliskova’s ability to come back from being down in multiple occasions is a big factor into her being the slight favorite heading into this match. But I wouldn’t write off Teichmann so quickly.

The 24-year old again has all the tools necessary to beat Pliskova. Her variety, which includes a strong serve, and an impressive lefty forehand, could catch Pliskova on her heels.

On the other hand, Pliskova has quite a bit more experience on her side heading into this match, including an impressive 27-15 record on the year. She’s known to be an offensive player, who attacks the ball, rather than letting it come to her. With the fast court conditions of the hard courts in Cincy, that definitely plays into her style of play over Teichmann.

Both Pliskova and Teichmann are playing really well. Teichmann seems to be riding more of a high, coming off two very strong wins, but as we’ve seen in the past, that sometimes can actually do the opposite of good for some players.

Expect Pliskova to earn a spot in the finals here, but don’t be surprised if Teichmann manages to win a set.

Best Bet: Pliskova (-205); Pliskova to win in three sets (+235)
