Keys to Victory

In defeating #23 seed Madison Keys 7-6(7-3), 6-3, Golubic was providing further evidence that at the age of 28, she may have finally found her groove on the tennis court. The Swiss player was ranked #129 in the world as recently as March 1st.

Golubic failed to qualify for the Australian Open. She was ousted in the first round of the French Open. However, her latest appearance in a slam is proving to be just grand.

Known for her old-school one-handed backhand, Golubic has won eight of her last nine matches played on a grass court. Against Keys, Golubic converted four of 10 break points. She also took advantage of four double faults by Keys. The Swiss player hit 28 winners against nine unforced errors.

Pliskova will be the third seeded player that Golubic has faced at Wimbledon. She outlasted #29 seed Veronika Kudermetova 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 in first-round play.

Pliskova Charging Back

Outside of the top 10 for the first time in five years, former world #1 Pliskova appears to be intent on moving right back into that elite neighborhood. The 29-year-old Czech demolished wildcard Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, 6-2, 6-3 in a match that lasted all of 75 minutes.

Eighth-seeded Pliskova hit 17 winners. Her winning percentage on first service was 83%. As well, Pliskova capitalized on four of six break points.

Samsonova came into this round of 16 meeting riding a 10-match win streak that included a tournament title in Berlin. She was no match for Pliskova, though. Samsonova committed 25 unforced errors.

With the victory, Pliskova has now reached the quarterfinals at all four tennis Grand Slam events.  She’s put on a clinical performance on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Through four matches, Pliskova has yet to drop a set. She hasn’t even been required to play a tiebreaker to take any of those sets.

Golubic Holding Historic Edge

These two players have met once on the tennis court, and it was Golubic who came away with the victory. Golubic came back to defeat Pliskova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a second-round Federation Cup match between Switzerland and the Czech Republic in 2016. However, that match was played in Switzerland on a hard-court surface.

There’s a glaring difference between these two players and it’s in their service game. That’s a vital component in having success at Wimbledon and few do it better than Pliskova. She’s already stroked 32 aces in this year’s tournament, averaging eight per match. She’s smacked 179 aces on the year.

Beyond her edge in service game and her success rate, the numbers show this match to be a virtual dead heat. But at Wimbledon, a big serve is so significant. If Pliskova can put Golubic on the defensive, she can make short work of her opponent.
