He’s been competitive in most of his matches, but hasn’t won many.

Wawrinka defeated Frances Tiafoe in three tiebreaks at Queen’s Club in June – then lost quickly to Tommy Paul.

He defeated Daniil Medvedev and Mikael Ymer in back-to-back marathons in Metz last month – but retired after three games in his semifinal against Alexander Bublik.

Now, having beaten Casper Ruud and backed that up with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima in Basel Thursday, he’ll want to take the next step.

Bautista Agut Steady as a Rock

While Wawrinka has experienced great highs and terrible lows in his career, Roberto Bautista Agut has been a model of overall good health and impressive consistency.

He looks and plays the same as he did in his 20s. That he gets beaten a little more often, with the host of talented youngsters who have begun to litter the ATP planet the last five years, is more evidence of the changing of the landscape. He has just kept doing what he’s been doing all along.

Norman Rejoins Team Wawrinka

Wawrinka’s best years came with solid Swede Magnus Norman by his side on coaching duty.

They split in the fall of 2020, after tennis’s post-COVID restart, after eight years together.

There were a couple of knee surgeries and foot issues in between.

But lookee here – Norman is back to see the final chapter through. They reunited before the Metz tournament last month. And the plan is go into the off-season together and also to Australia.

It can’t hurt; Norman does know what worked best for Wawrinka – but most of that came in his prime, when the Swiss was younger and also healthier.

But Norman knows Wawrinka’s game like no one else and it might well be the little bump he needs, as the comeback road has been, well … bumpy.

Bautista Agut vs Wawrinka Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2019 Doha (QF) Outdoor Hard 6-4, 6-4 Bautista Agut
2016 St. Petersburg (SF) Indoor Hard 7-6 (8), 6-2 Wawrinka

Given how many years these two have been on tour – at 34, Bautista Agut turned pro in 2005 and at 37, Wawrinka went pro in 2002 – it’s almost shocking they’ve only faced each other twice.

Wawrinka had just won the US Open in 2016 when he headed to St Petersburg for their first meeting a week later. And it was a straight-sets win.

Wawrinka was still ranked No. 66 but on fragile knees when they met in Doha to begin the 2019 season.

It’s not much to base this third meeting on.

Bautista Agut vs Wawrinka Pick

Bautista Agut had a good first round against qualifier Laslo Djere, and took care of business.

He also easily eliminated Andy Murray in straight sets in the second round.

He’s fresh. You know what you’re getting with him.

For Wawrinka, it feels as though he’s done his bit in beating the world No. 3 Ruud, whose results have been sub-par since his successful hard-court summer.  It was emotional – Wawrinka’s first top-10 win on “home turf” in Basel since he beat David Nalbandian there in … 2006, when he was a kid of 21.

And then he backed it up with a tough, grinding victory in the next round.

The odds and props seem to indicate it could be a close match, a long one.

We predict that Wawrinka will just not have the energy and legs to play a third top-level match.

Best Bet: Bautista Agut in Two Sets (+150)
