Svitolina Eases into the Quarterfinals

The Ukrainian enters the quarterfinals riding a nine-game win streak, and has yet to drop at set at the Grand Slam. She eased past Simona Halep in the fourth round to earn her spot here, winning 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour, and extended her head-to-head record against the Romanian to 6-4.

Svitolina entered the US Open after winning her 16th career title at the Chicago Women’s Open last week, and extends her 2021 season record to 37-16.

The Ukrainian finished with 16 winners and 14 unforced errors, and managed to rely heavily on her serve in this match. She recorded 10 of her winners via serve, and landed 66 percent of her first serves, converting 71 percent of those into points.

There were a few moments where she minimized her intensity, which allowed for Halep to put herself in the match, but each time, she managed to pull herself out, and keep the momentum. After the match, Svitolina spoke to staying mentally strong in a match like that, and that’s what she felt allowed her to close the match out in two sets.

She’ll now look to take on Fernandez, who is having herself a career-best tournament. But this won’t be the first meeting between the two.

Back-to-Back Upsets for Fernandez

The newly 19-year old Fernandez has earned her spot in the quarterfinals of the biggest tournament of her career so far. This is not her first Grand Slam appearance, but it is her first quarterfinal Grand Slam appearance, and she’s put on quite the show to get here.

The Canadian, who just celebrated her 19th birthday yesterday, has defeated two multiple Grand Slam champions in her most recent matches to earn her spot in the final eight. She defeated Osaka in the third round 5-7, 7(7)-6(2), 6-2, and most recently, Angelique Kerber 4-6, 7(7)-6(5), 6-2.

She managed three aces, with six double faults. This will have to be something she tightens up against her quarterfinal opponent, if she wants to advance. But Fernandez battled and showed us that she can hang with the best of them.

Head-to-Head

These two have only played each other once before, but it also happened to be a quarterfinal match. The one and only meeting between Svitolina and Fernandez came at the Monterrey Open in 2020, where Svitolina won 6-4, 7-5.

Best Bet

Fernandez is having the tournament of a lifetime this year, and usually at this point in the tournament she would be facing her toughest opponent to date, but that’s not the case. Svitolina is a tough opponent, but having defeated Osaka and most recently Kerber, she’s could do it.

Something that Svitolina brings to the court is experience, something Fernandez is getting at the moment, but doesn’t necessarily have as an edge just yet. On top of experience, the 26-year old’s serve has been red hot all tournament. She’s only been broken three times in her four matches. Fernandez’s serve is something that she’s been trying to work on, but is definitely not the strongest part of her game.

At this point in the tournament, it’s fair to start talking about fatigue. As Svitolina has eased through the tournament, having defeated all her opponents up until this point in straight sets, she’s spent less time on the court than Fernandez. The 19-year old Canadian has two back-to-back three set matches now, which could cause a bit of fatigue in the second week of the tournament.

Regardless of the outcome, this match looks to go the distance as well, as both players are playing very strong tennis.
