  • It took until the end of Tuesday for the bottom half of the draw to complete the first round
  • There will be no second-round matches where one player gets a full extra day of rest.
  • We break down three selected matches that could offer some value

Because of long rain delays, it took two days to complete the first-round matches in the bottom half of the draw.

They were scheduled to be done by the end of Monday.

Amid the general shock Tuesday over pre-tournament favorite Serena Williams limping out of Wimbledon after just six games, her 41-year-old sister Venus was the tale of inspiration.

Player Rest Generally Equal for Second Round

As the rain caused a pair of four-hour delays during both Monday and Tuesday, the tournament generally cancelled scheduled matches in pairs.

As a result, while six of the 16 matches Wednesday will feature players deprived of the typical day between matches, both players in each matchup will be in the same situation.

So there are few instances where one player has a rest advantage over her opponent.

In four cases, one player had to complete a match Tuesday. But in all cases it was only a matter of a few games.

Ons Jabeur vs Venus Williams Prediction

Many eyes will be on this one, after 41-year-old Williams defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu in a long three-setter to advance to the second round on Tuesday.

Jabeur won her first career singles title at Eastbourne last week (and reached the doubles final as well). It was a lot to absorb all at once for the player considered to be at her best on clay. But at 26, having been through plenty to finally get there, she’s likely better prepared than most.

The 26-year-old, had an extra day to recover because of the Monday rain. She breezed past opponent Rebecca Peterson Tuesday with the loss of just three games while Williams was grinding.

All of which to say – while you count Williams out at your peril – Jabeur will be much fresher. And she has the tennis tools to make Williams bend, and lunge, and move up and back on the court.

Williams, a five-time former Wimbledon champion, got a No. 1 Court assignment for her second-round match. That and a pro-Williams crowd might intimidate Jabeur, just a little. But Williams’ bluff of a second serve at the moment won’t make a dent.

Best Bet: Jabeur in two sets (-215)

Iga Swiatek vs Vera Zvonareva Prediction

Swiatek might be a former Wimbledon junior champion, but Zvonareva is a former singles finalist – back when Swiatek was nine years old, in 2010.

The Russian’s first-round victory over Marie Bouzkova was her first in the main draw since 2014, a span that included several years away on maternity leave.

As with Jabeur and Williams, there’s a huge age gap. Swiatek just turned 20; Zvonareva is nearly 37.

It’s the first meeting between the two, and Swiatek will find herself up against a feisty opponent who will counter whatever comes her way.

Still, Swiatek should probably be a stronger favorite than she is.

Best Bet: Swiatek in two sets (+112)

Petra Martic vs Irina Camelia Begu Prediction

The 30-year-old veterans have met just once, in the second round of the 2018 Australian Open. Martic won in two close sets.

Martic has a better grass toolkit. And she has had some better results at Wimbledon overall. But Begu has improved on the surface with the years. And her serve is more effective on the grass.

This one could be a lengthy one.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+145)
