KBO Picks & Odds (October 14): KT Wiz Extends Kiwoom’s Losing Streak

The race for second in the KBO is heating up as just two games separate second place KT Wiz from fifth place Kiwoom. Those teams will square off again on Wednesday at 5:30 am EST, after the Suwon knocked off the Heroes 7-3 on Tuesday.

KT Wiz chased Kiwoom ace Eric Jokisch after just 4.1 innings, and pounded 13 hits en route to victory. With the win, they leap frogged LG into sole possession of second, 4.5 games behind NC.

A Suwon Power Surge

After crossing the plate 37 times in six games last week, KT Wiz’s offense picked up right where it left on Tuesday and now gets a favorable matchup against Won Tae Choi. The right-hander lasted just 3.1 innings in his last outing versus NC, surrendering four runs and two homers.

Choi has struggled to keep the ball in the yard this season, allowing 15 home runs in 103.1 innings. Last season by comparison, he surrendered just five homers in 157.1 innings. That could prove to be costly against KT Wiz, who rank second in home runs per game.

Slugger Mel Rojas cranked home run number 44 on Sunday, and has destroyed Kiwoom pitching this season. The reigning KBO home run King is hitting .396 versus the Heroes in 2020, with 5 home runs and 12 RBI.

KT Wiz will counter with Je Seong Bae, who’s in a groove at the moment. The 24-year-old has surrendered two earned runs or less in five straight outings. He’s 1-0 versus Kiwoom this season, and has won six of his past eight decisions overall.

LG Has Sampson’s Number

LG had its six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday by Lotte, but are in a prime bounce back spot on Wednesday against the Giants. They’ll take on Adrian Sampson, a pitcher they’ve dominated this season.

The Twins have beaten Sampson in three of their four matchups this season, touching him up for at least six runs in two of those four outings.

Lotte will counter with Chan Gyu Lim, who was virtually flawless in his last outing. The 27-year-old scattered four hits over 7 shutout innings versus Samsung, striking out 6 Lions batters along the way. The start was a much needed confidence builder, after he allowed 18 runs over his previous four appearances.

Lim is 1-1 versus the Giants this season, limiting Lotte to four runs total over 12 innings. I wouldn’t read too much into the Giants 17-run outburst on Tuesday, as all of those runs came off Won Suk Ryu, who was making his first career start, and Sang Gyu Lee, one of the Twins weakest relievers.

We have 129 games worth of proof that Lotte’s offense is not very strong, and I expect them to show their true colors against Lim in this matchup.
