  • Super Bowl LVII is estimated to see twice as many bettors as previous Super Bowl
  • 50.4 million adults plan to bet on the game

The Super Bowl is always the apex of sports betting in America, but Super Bowl LVII is set to shatter sports betting records, according to the American Gaming Association.

The AGA is predicting a record-setting amount of adults are planning to bet on the upcoming Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

Super Bowl LVII May Set Records

According to a survey conducted by the AGA, more than 50.4 million adults are planning to bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl, more than  a 61% increase of estimates for the 2022 Super Bowl.

Morning Consult conducted the online survey on behalf of the AGA between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, 2023, among a national sample of 2,199 adults.

“Every year, the Super Bowl serves to highlight the benefits of legal sports betting: bettors are transitioning to the protections of the regulated market, leagues and sports media are seeing increased engagement, and legal operators are driving needed tax revenue to states across the country.” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller in a press release.

The total handle is estimated to be over $16 billion, more than double the 2022 Super Bowl total handle. The legal sports betting handle for Super Bowl 57 alone is estimated to break the $1 billion mark this year.

Betting Breakdowns

The AGA asked bettors how they are planning to place a bet for the Super Bowl. Using an online sports betting operator was the most popular method, but here are the complete results:

  • Online operator: 38%
  • Betting casually among friends: 34%
  • Participating in a pool/square contest: 26%
  • Betting in person at a sportsbook: 18%
  • Betting with a bookie: 13%

Bettors are evenly split on the outcome of the game with 44% each planning to bet on the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, according to the AGA survey results.

More than a third of NFL fans in the survey said that the expansion of legal sports betting has made watching an NFL game more exciting.

The majority of respondents, 71%, reported seeing a responsible gaming message in the last year, and young Americans (those under 35) were more likely to report seeing a responsible gaming message.

Young Americans in the survey were also more likely to say that betting through legal means was an important issue.
