Talk about a bad break. Just two days after clinching home field in the Wild Card Round of the MLB playoff bracket, the Blue Jays (91-69, 44-35 away) will have to play a doubleheader on Wednesday versus the Orioles (82-78, 44-35 home) to end the season.

The AL East rivals had their game postponed on Tuesday due to rain, meaning Toronto will have to be careful not to tax their regulars with their first playoff date set for Friday.

Toronto vs Baltimore Probable Pitchers

The Blue Jays, who’ll begin the postseason with +1300 World Series odds, will give the ball to Mitch White. The 27-year-old isn’t expected to see much playoff action, if any, and with the postseason starting in two days he’ll be asked to eat a lot of innings regardless of how he looks.

If you’re an Orioles backer that’s great news. White has been atrocious since being acquired from the LA Dodgers, yielding 27 runs in his last 25.2 innings of work. He’s surrendered 36 hits over that stretch, failing to make it out of the 5th inning in all but two of his outings as a Blue Jay.

Toronto has dropped seven of his nine appearances, including versus Baltimore last month. White was shelled for five hits in just 2.1 innings of work, taking the loss in a 9-6 defeat.

White vs Baumann Stats

Mitch White
VS
Mike Baumann
1-6 Record 1-3
5.21 ERA 4.34
1.44 WHIP 1.45
.270 OBA .298
2.1 SO/W Ratio 1.7

The Orioles will counter with Mike Baumann. The 27-year-old will make his fourth start of the season, after splitting his time between the rotation and the bullpen. He’s yielded three runs or less each of his starts so far, and limited Toronto to three runs and nine hits over seven combined innings over two appearances last month.

Baumann has much better splits at home than on the road this season (3.93 ERA at Camden Yards, 5.06 ERA as a visitor) and will have the luxury of facing a very watered down Blue Jays lineup.

Blue Jays vs Orioles Betting Analysis

Toronto caught fire down the stretch to wrap up the top AL Wild Card spot, posting a 23-11 record. Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman and Vladimir Guerrero started each of those games, while George Springer played all but one. They were all scheduled to get the day off on Tuesday, as was Teoscar Hernandez and Alejandro Kirk. Now it seems likely they’ll all play sparingly or hardly at all in Wednesday’s twin bill.

Given that they represent the team’s six best hitters, Baumann should be able to find success. Hernandez in particular was raking so far this month, going 9-for-13, witht seven runs, three homers, five RBI and a 2.231 OPS.

The Orioles meanwhile, have already clinched their best record since 2016, and there’s no indication yet that they’ll sit their regulars, at least for the first game. That gives Baltimore a significant advantage in the talent department, and they’ll be looking to close out a successful 2022 on a high note.

No one expected much from the O’s this season, yet they were a legitimate playoff contender until faltering in the second last week of the season. They’ve dropped seven of their last 10, but did take two of three from the AL East champion Yankees this past weekend.

Blue Jays vs Orioles Pick

Toronto has bigger fish to fry than Baltimore, and their roster decisions reflect that. There’s no way White would get the ball in a meaningful game, and expect the O’s to continue roughing him up, just like his previous handful of opponents have.

With the Blue Jays expected to rest the majority of their starting lineup, roll with the Orioles at home to take Game 1 of the twin bill.

Pick: Baltimore Orioles Moneyline (-145)
