  • The Milwaukee Brewers are on the brink of elimination after dropping Game 1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks as heavy favorites
  • The pitching matchup for Game 2 looks considerably more even with Arizona sending Zac Gallen to the mound and Milwaukee going with Freddy Peralta

After a subpar performance on the mound and at the plate in last night’s 6-3 loss, the Milwaukee Brewers (92-71, 49-33 home) are suddenly on the brink of elimination, needing a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks (85-78, 42-40 away) on Wednesday evening to force a decisive third and final game in their best-of-three NL Wild Card.

The odds for Game 2 favor Milwaukee, but not nearly as heavily as they did in Game 1.

Diamondbacks vs Brewers Game 2 Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Arizona Diamondbacks +110 +1.5 (-200) O 7.5 (-105)
Milwaukee Brewers -130 -1.5 (+165) U 7.5 (-115)

After failing to take advantage of a huge pitching mismatch yesterday, the Brewers are only slight -130 home favorites in Wednesday’s MLB odds. The run total is set at 7.5 with the under slightly favored. Last night’s 6-3 Arizona victory was the only one of Tuesday’s four MLB playoff games to go over the total.

Milwaukee’s World Series odds plummeted from +1886 to +3157 after Tuesday’s loss. The DBacks improved from +3786 on average to +2343, while their NL Pennant odds shot from +1700 to +993.

The winner of this best-of-three series will face the LA Dodgers in the NLDS portion of the MLB playoff bracket.

Arizona vs Milwaukee Starting Pitchers

Yesterday’s win was absolutely massive for the Diamondbacks. WIth their top-two starters unavailable due to pitching on the weekend, they managed to pick up the all-important Game 1 victory despite a brutal performance from rookie Brandon Pfaadt.

Now Arizona has the luxury of trotting out ace Zac Gallen for Game 2.

Zac Gallen vs Freddy Peralta

Gallen
VS
Peralta
17-9 Record 12-10
3.47 ERA 3.86
4.16 xERA 3.33
1.12 WHIP 1.12
26.0% SO% 30.9%

Gallen struggled a little in the second half of the season compared to his stellar first half, but he remains Arizona’s best option on the mound. He’s also been lights out against Milwaukee’s lineup, which has an absurdly poor .171/.205/.229 slash-line in 72 at-bats against the 6’2 righty.

No Brewer hitter has ever homered off of Gallen or even collected an RBI!

Peralta has even stingier numbers against Arizona batters, but in a much smaller sample size. In 22 total at-bats, DBack hitters are slashing 0.91/.200/.136, but only three players have faced Peralta more than twice.

Peralta, who boasted a strikeout percentage just north of 30 in the regular season, is listed with a higher strikeout over/under (5.5) than his counterpart Gallen (4.5) even though Gallen’s outs-recorded props is two higher at 16.5. Peralta needs to finish the fifth inning to hit the over while Gallen needs two outs in the sixth.

The player with the shortest home run odds on Wednesday is Willy Adames at +330. Only one player is listed with a hits prop over 0.5 (William Contreras). The shortest odds to record an RBI belong to Josh Donaldson at +150.

Diamondbacks vs Brewers Game 2 Picks & Predictions

It’s not often you see the type of domination that Gallen has exhibited against this Milwaukee lineup (in a not-insignificant sample size, as well). The way Milwaukee blew last night’s early three-run lead is the type of gaffe that can stick with you for 24 hours or more. Expect another frustrating performance from Brewer hitters at the plate and a stunningly quick exit from the NL Central champions.

DBacks vs Brewers Picks:

  • Gallen under 2.5 earned runs (-135)
  • Diamondbacks moneyline (+110)
