  • The Cincinnati Reds are -116 home favorites over the Colorado Rockies in a National League game slated for Friday, September 2
  • Colorado and Cincinnati have split the last 10 meetings 5-5
  • The Rockies swept a three-game series from the Reds April 29-May 1 at Colorado

They could call the competition between the Colorado Rockies (56-76, 20-44 away) and Cincinnati Reds (51-78, 27-38 home) the even-steven series. Over the past 10 meetings, each team shows five victories.

Through the last 12 it’s 6-6 and 7-7 over the past 14 games. The last 16 were split 8-8 and the last 18 games? You guessed it – 9-9.

However, reduce the calculation to games played during the 2022 MLB season and the margin turns heavily toward the Rockies. The Rockies swept a three-game series from the Reds from April 29-May 1 at Colorado. Then again, the last series played at Cincinnati in 2021 was a three-game set swept by the Reds.

Cincinnati is the locale for a three-game series this weekend and the Reds are -116 favorites for the series opener.

Colorado vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland is 0-2 through his past four starts. He’s allowed 16 earned runs over 21.2 innings pitched in that span for an ERA of 6.65.

Freeland ranks among the bottom 7% of MLB pitchers in Max EV (115.2), in the bottom 8% in xERA (5.30) and xwOBA (.352), the bottom 9% in xBA (.274) and xSLG (.464) and in the bottom 10% in strikeout percentage (16.2). He also leads National League hurlers in hit batters (15).

Freeland is 3-5 with a 3.62 ERA in 12 road starts. He’s 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA against the Reds in 2022, but 3-2 with a 7.16 ERA over six career starts facing Cincinnati.

4.88 ERA 5.36
5.30 xERA 5.16
1.40 WHIP 1.44

Recently installed into the depleted Cincinnati starting rotation, Reds right-hander Luis Cessa will be making his fourth start of the season. He worked a season-high four innings in his last start on August 27 as Cincinnati beat the Washington Nationals 6-2.

That was the first time Cessa had been involved in a Reds victory since June 26. Cincinnati is 11-28 this season when Cessa pitches. He rates among the bottom 10% of MLB pitchers in xERA (5.16) and xwOBA (.438) and the bottom 6% in xSLG (.473).

He’s made two relief appearances against the Rockies this season, allowing two hits and one earned run in two innings of work. Those are Cessa’s only career appearances against Colorado.

Rockies vs Reds Prediction

Colorado pounded Cincinnati pitching for 24 runs in that three-game sweep earlier this season. But that was at home.

On the road, the Rockies have won a National League-low 20 games. Thursday’s 3-0 loss at Atlanta dropped Colorado to 5-17 SU over the club’s past 22 away games.

The Rockies have dropped five in a row at Cincinnati. They’ve been outscored 33-13 in those games.

Pick: Cincinnati Reds ML (-116)
