  • The Chicago White Sox are road favorites over the Minnesota Twins Wednesday afternoon
  • It will be a veteran vs rookie matchup, as the Pale Hose trot out Lance Lynn (10-3, 2.04 ERA) while the Twins counter with Bailey Ober (1-1, 4.99 ERA)
  • The odds and pitching matchups can be found below with a prediction

The Chicago White Sox look to extend their lead over the competition in the American League Central standings when they close out a three-game road series against the Minnesota Twins at 1:10 pm ET Wednesday at Target Field.

Chicago opened as -170 favorites on the moneyline and that number has not changed much.

White Sox vs Twins Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Chicago White Sox -165 -1.5 (-110) Over 9 (-110)
Minnesota Twins +145 +1.5 (-110) Under 9 (-110)

Odds as of August 10th at DraftKings.

The White Sox (67-47, 29-27 away) hold a 10.5-game lead over Cleveland in the division standings, while the Twins (49-65, 25-31 home) reside in the AL Central cellar, 18 games out of first place.

Prior to the three-game set against Minnesota, Tony La Russa’s club swept a three-game series on the North Side against their reeling crosstown rival Cubs. The White Sox have a 13-11 post-All-Star break record entering Tuesday’s game and will face the Yankees Thursday in the much-anticipated, year-delayed “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa.

With Lynn — and his MLB-leading 2.04 ERA  — going in this one, the division leaders are big favorites on getaway day. Coming into the series, the Twins took three of four on the road against Houston, but are only 9-15 so far in the second half.

Probable Pitchers

In a contrasting starting pitching matchup, two-time All-Star Lance Lynn (10-3, 2.04) faces first-year starter Bailey Ober (1-1, 4.99).

Lynn is coming off his 12th quality start of the season (in 20 starts), going six innings and allowing only four hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out eight in an eventual 8-6 ChiSox victory over the Cubs. He’s tossed a quality start in four of his last five outings.

Lynn vs Ober

Lance Lynn
VS
Bailey Ober

10-3 Record 1-1
2.04 ERA 4.99
2.78 xERA 4.34
1.05 WHIP 1.30
3.71 SO/W 3.73

Lynn has been dealing this season, with a league-leading ERA nearly a run better than anyone else. His former teammate in Texas, Kyle Gibson, is second in the Junior Circuit with a 2.87 ERA. Chicago rewarded the 34-year-old handsomely last month, giving him a two-year, $38 million contract extension. With the veteran helping anchor the rotation, the White Sox hold the largest division lead in the big leagues.

Lynn is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in eight road starts this season. In eight day games, he’s even better — sporting a 4-1 mark and 1.53 ERA.

Lynn is 2-0 in four starts against Minnesota this season, with the White Sox splitting the four games. He went seven innings and scattered five hits, while allowing only one earned run, one walk, and four strikeouts in his most recent outing July 19th, an eventual 3-2 Twins victory.

In stark contrast, Ober is still looking for his first quality start of the season. The 6-foot-9 rookie has pitched in the fifth inning in five of his 12 starts this season.

The 26-year-old has picked up both of his decisions against the division leaders he faces Wednesday, going 1-1 over four starts. Minnesota has split those four games games with Chicago. That includes his best start of the season — a five-inning effort on July 5th that saw him allow only two hits while walking three and striking out seven and not allowing an earned run.

Jiménez Stays Hot In Return

The White Sox seem to be all but assured of a postseason berth despite  missing a pair of key players for awhile. But with Eloy Jiménez and Luis Robert back in the lineup, La Russa’s group is looking even more formidable.

Jiménez hit two homers with five RBI for the second straight game Monday night against Minnesota in the series opener, while Robert came off the 60-day injured list to deliver an RBI double and single in an 11-1 blowout over the home team.

Jiménez has five homers and 14 RBI in 10 games since his return from the injured list after missing all of the season with a ruptured pectoral tendon sustained in spring training.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

White Sox Batters Batting Average vs Bailey Ober
Tim Anderson .091
Jose Abreu .429
Yoan Moncada .375
Brian Goodwin .500
Selby Zavala .000

Ober has not faced Jiménez or Robert — but has been roughed up against other big hitters in the Pale Hose lineup, Joe Abreu is 3-for-7 against him, with a double, triple and home run among the hits. Yoan Moncada is 3-for-8 against Ober with a double and a dinger. Plus, the one Chicago player Ober has had success against — Tim Anderson — was 3-for-5 Monday, with one those hits being a big fly. It certainly seems the deck is stacked mightily against Ober.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Twins Batters Batting Average vs Lance Lynn
Max Kepler .000
Jorge Polanco .286
Miguel Sano .429
Jake Cave .500
Ryan Jeffers .667
Trevor Larnach .300
Andrelton Simmons .308

As for Twins batters against Lynn, Sano is the one true standout. The Minnesota slugger owns a 3-for-7 career history against Lynn, with a double and two home runs. But the Twins will need much more than Sano to overcome the ChiSox.

White Sox vs Twins Pick

The Twins showed signs of life in Texas over the weekend. But simply put, the White Sox are the vastly superior team.  The White Sox own a 13-4 mark over the Twins this season (heading into Tuesday).

With Lynn going — and the South Siders’ lineup heating up — the road team is the smart play in this spot.

The Pick: White Sox moneyline (-165)
