After a slight scoring funk, the Texas Rangers (62-46, 36-20 home) found their offense in a big way against the Chicago White Sox (43-66, 20-37 away) Wednesday night.

Now, they’ll trot out their prized trade deadline pitching addition as they seek a sweep of Chicago.

Max Scherzer will make his first start since being acquired from the Mets, a game after Texas blasted Chicago 11-1. The Rangers had tallied six total runs in their last four games, losing three of them.

Probable Pitchers

While the veteran Scherzer is definitely on the back nine of his career, the 39-year-old can absolutely be a difference maker for Texas in the playoffs. Combined with the pickup of Jordan Montgomery, that’s a solid top two of the rotation, and dynamite if stud Nathan Eovaldi bounces back from a forearm strain.

Scherzer arrives off a win in his last start with the Mets, a 6-1 decision over the Nationals. Mad Max went seven strong, scattering just six hits and surrendering a lone earned run, walking two and fanning seven.

Three starts ago, he threw 1-hit ball over seven innings in a game New York eventually lost to the Dodgers 2-1 in 10 innings. Scherzer did walk three, and struck out six.

It’s that start between those two that might be concerning, when he was lit on fire by the Red Sox, taking the L in an 8-6 defeat. He went six innings, giving up five earned runs and four home runs, walking two and striking out seven.

Touki Toussaint gets the call for the White Sox, and he’s coming off his first win of the season in a 3-0 triumph over the Cleveland Guardians.

Toussaint pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just three hits, walking one and striking out four.

He’s faced Texas this season in relief, in his first appearance with the White Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Guardians.

Toussaint looked great, going four innings without giving up a hit, walking a pair and striking out four.

Does Scherzer slide right into the rotation and offer electric stuff? If you think he does, it’s a nice little wager to jump on his strikeout total of 7.5.

He’s gone four straight starts failing to hit eight k’s after his best stretch of the year, where he had at least eight punchouts in seven of eight outings.
