Probable Pitchers
Kluber will be looking to put together a solid outing on Thursday after an underwhelming start last time out against his former team, the Texas Rangers. The 35-year-old went just 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs as he took the no-decision. He has been relatively effective though for the Yankees, going 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 15 games this season.
Kluber has shown the ability to strike out hitters like most of his career, racking up 80 K’s in 75.1 innings. However, his command has been shaky, giving up 32 walks. Since returning from the IL on August 30th, Kluber has struggled, posting an ERA well over five in five appearances.

He’s also pitched very poorly on the road with a 5.00 ERA. The Blue Jays have also hit Kluber very well in 2021, clubbing four homers and scoring six earned runs off him in 11 frames. With the Jays playoff fate hanging in the balance across the next number of days, Kluber will be looking to shut down their potent offense. But, all of his numbers point to the exact opposite.
Kluber vs Ray
5-3 | Record | 13-6 |
3.82 | ERA | 2.68 |
75.1 | Innings Pitched | 188 |
80 | SO | 244 |
32 | BB | 49 |
Ray has been an absolute stud for the Jays this year and one of the best pitchers in the big leagues. The left-hander has a stellar 2.68 ERA and 13-6 record in 31 starts, striking out an AL-best 244 batters in the process. You’ll have a hard time finding anybody that is throwing the ball as well as Ray. Last time out, the 29-year-old captured his 13th win of the season after limiting the Twins to three hits and one run over six innings of work.

However, his control has wavered a bit across the last two outings, walking six. Unfortunately, the Yankees are one of the only teams who have actually hit him very well. Ray boasts a dismal 5.59 ERA against New York in two outings. On a more positive note, he has a 2.28 ERA at home. The southpaw will need to limit the free passes because with just how hot the Bronx Bombers’ bats are right now, mistakes have to be limited, especially to Giancarlo Stanton.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Blue Jays Hitters | Batting Average vs Kluber | Yankees Hitters | Batting Average vs Ray |
---|---|---|---|
Bo Bichette | .429 | Joey Gallo | .000 |
Cavan Biggio | .333 | Kyle Higashioka | .500 |
Corey Dickerson | .364 | Tyler Wade | .000 |
Jarrod Dyson | .333 | Aaron Judge | .250 |
Randal Grichuk | .000 | DJ LaMahieu | .269 |
Vladimir Guerrero Jr | .750 | Rougned Odor | .250 |
Lourdes Gurriel | .125 | Anthony Rizzo | .154 |
Teoscar Hernandez | .000 | Gary Sanchez | .250 |
Danny Jansen | .000 | Giancarlo Stanton | .111 |
Alejandro Kirk | .500 | Gleyber Torres | .000 |
Marcus Semien | .188 | Gio Urshela | .400 |
George Springer | .357 | Luke Voit | .000 |
The Yankees have been clicking on all cylinders lately, especially offensively. Stanton has been absolutely raking, going deep in four straight games prior to Wednesday’s game. He slugged a massive three-run bomb in Tuesday’s victory in Toronto, giving him 35 home runs on the season. While New York has been able to score some runs off Ray, they’re hitting only .186 off him as a lineup. a clutch long ball could be the difference-maker here.

Toronto tends to play well behind Ray and they’ve hit very well off Kluber. As a lineup, the Jays are hitting .280 against the veteran righty, which is a great sign heading into the series finale. George Springer has 17 career at-bats vs. Kluber and is batting .353. Bo Bichette, Corey Dickerson, and Vladimir Guerrero have all enjoyed success as well.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Prediction
Even though Ray has dealt with problems against New York, the Jays need a terrific start out of him on Thursday. Given the type of year he’s had, I expect the ace to rise to the occasion. Toronto simply rakes off Kluber and that will continue in the finale. Take the Blue Jays on the moneyline.
Pick: Toronto Blue Jays moneyline (-140)
