The Phoenix Suns (2-2, 1-1 home, 3-1 ATS) have had 48 hours to ruminate on the disastrous end to their game against San Antonio (2-2, 1-1 away, 2-2 ATS) on Tuesday as they get set to host the Spurs again on Thursday night at the Footprint Center (7:00 pm PT/10:00 pm ET).

Oddsmakers don’t see San Antonio pulling off a second straight upset, listing the Suns as 8.5-point favorites and -400 on the moneyline in Thursday’s NBA odds.

Not only did Phoenix lead by 20 midway through the third quarter on Tuesday, they also led by a point with under ten second on the clock and possession.

Tuesday’s loss was the Suns first ATS setback of the season. Their other straight-up loss came shorthanded at the Lakers (100-95) as 6.5-point road underdogs. They beat Golden State 108-104 on opening as three-point road underdogs and trounced Utah 126-104 last Friday as 5.5-point home favorites.

In addition to the previous win over Phoenix, San Antonio also owns a victory over Houston (126-122), narrowly covering as 3.5-point home favorites, plus losses to Dallas (126-119 as 4.5-point home underdogs) and the LA Clippers (123-83 as 9.5-point road ‘dogs).

Phoenix Suns Injury Woes Continue on Thursday night

After acquiring Bradley Beal in the offseason, the longtime Wizard was supposed to comprise the NBA’s newest “big three” alongside Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. But Durant is having to shoulder the load early in the season with both Beal (back) and Booker (toe) battling injuries. Neither played on Tuesday and both are out again on Thursday night.

Booker has only played one game so far (on opening night) while Beal has yet to suit up for his new team. Durant is averaging 27.3 PPG in the early going, along with 7.0 RPG and 4.8 APG, which is a team-high aside from Booker (8.0 in one game played).

Despite the injuries, and Tuesday’s result, the public is still hammering the Suns in Thursday’s NBA public betting splits. Phoenix is getting 72% of ATS handle as 8.5-point favorites as of 3:00 pm ET. But note that the public is well under .500 so far this season (29-37-1 ATS).

Unsurprisingly, Durant is listed with a game-high point total of 28.5 O/U. He dropped 39 in the loss to the Lakers, but has otherwise stayed under 27 in all other games this year.

On the Spurs side, their three leading scorers – Vassell (20.0 PPG), Johnson (17.3 PPG), and Wembanyama (16.3 PPG) – are all listed with point totals in the 16.5 to 17.5 range. Vassell has gone over his total of 17.5 in three of four games this year, while Johnson had a game-high 27 in Tuesday’s win. He’s now hit at least 17 points in three of four games, only failing to hit that benchmark in the loss to the Clippers when he had just five points in 24 minutes.

Wembanyama remains the heavy favorite in the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year odds at -150 on average. Durant is currently +1775 in the NBA MVP odds, which puts him among the top-ten favorites, but well back of Nikola Jokic at +382.

Spurs vs Suns Predictions

The Suns are going to be a force at full strength, if and when they get there. They’re certainly not a bad team without Booker and Beal, but their depth is lacking. Josh Okogie, who’s never averaged more than 8.6 PPG in a season, is currently their third-leading scorer at 11.3 PPG. The young Spurs are going to have off nights – like the disaster against the Clippers – but they have more than enough talent to hang with the shorthanded Suns, as they showed on Tuesday, and Gregg Popovich remains the best in the business.

San Antonio vs Phoenix Picks:

  • Spurs +8.5 (-105)
  • Johnson over 17.5 points (-115)
  • Durant under 27.5 points (-105)
