The Suns (30-26, 11-18 away) surprised the basketball world on Thursday by trading for Kevin Durant. The move puts them in position to chase the franchise’s first title, but it came at a cost.

Two-way star Mikal Bridges and key reserve Cam Johnson were sent to Brooklyn in the trade, leaving Phoenix short on bodies for the moment. Durant is out indefinitely, while T.J. Warren, who was also part of the trade, hasn’t joined the Suns yet.

Phoenix had just nine players active on Thursday night for a loss in Atlanta, and they’re likely to be shorthanded again on Friday when they face the Pacers (25-31, 17-12 home) in Indiana.

That’s one of the reasons online sportsbooks are high on the Pacers in the NBA odds, as they opened Indiana as short home favorites.

Suns vs Pacers Betting Trends

One player who will be in the Suns lineup on Friday is Devin Booker. The three-time All-Star returned after a 21 game absence on Tuesday due to a groin injury, but was given the night off on Thursday for injury management.

Predictably, with only nine bodies available, Phoenix was blasted by the Hawks. They fell behind 14 points early and could never recover thanks to some underwhelming shooting numbers. The Suns shot just 45% from the field, and were a dreadful 7-of-30 from three (23%). Their defense, which has been playing exceptionally well, did its best to keep them in the game, but they couldn’t keep Atlanta off the glass.

The Hawks racked up an absurd 59-35 rebounding advantage, pulling down 20 offensive boards. That led to plenty of second chance points and Phoenix simply couldn’t recover.

The loss was just the Suns’ third in their last 12 games. They enter play on Friday ranked second in Net Rating during that stretch and third in defensive rating. Booker’s availability will certainly boost their offensive ceiling, but it’s going to be hard to overcome the lack of bodies, especially on the second half of a back-to-back.

Indiana meanwhile, isn’t dealing with any injuries, and could potentially have newcomers George Hill and Jordan Nwora available for this matchup. The duo came over from Milwaukee at the deadline, to help the Pacers make a playoff push. Indiana enters play just a game out of a play-in tournament berth. They’ve lost two straight and 13 of 15 overall, but tend to play much better at home.

The Pacers average four more points per 100 possessions on offense in their own building. They also allow five points fewer on defense. They boast a 17-12 home record, and have been even better in their own building against the spread.

Suns vs Pacers Predictions

Indiana is 18-11 ATS at home, including 13-7 against the spread as home underdogs. They’ve won 10 of those 20 contests as home ‘dogs outright, and have covered in three of four games overall despite posting just one victory.

They’re the healthier team, with possible reinforcements on the way, playing at home. Phoenix on the other hand, has struggled on the second night of back-to-backs. They’ve covered in that instance only three times in eight tries, and are once again going to be shorthanded.

The Suns saw their NBA Championship odds shortened from +1900 to +425 after acquiring Durant. They also bolstered their depth by adding Darius Bazley from the Thunder. This team is going to be a factor in the title conversation once the roster is at full strength. They’ll be far from that on Friday though making them a prime fade candidate.

Pick: Indiana Pacers -1 (-110)
