  • The Wizards are 2-0 against the Hornets this season

The NBA is giving us 10 games to sweat on Friday night, including the Wizards tilt with the Hornets. Washington (11-11, 3-7 away) will look to snap a four-game road losing streak, while Charlotte (6-15, 3-6 home) will aim to win for the third time in four games.

Oddsmakers are siding with the Wizards in the NBA odds, pegging them as short road chalk. Early bettors seem to agree, as nearly all the spread money is backing Washington.

Washington Wizards Betting Analysis

The fact that the Wizards are laying 3 points is not a product how good they are, but rather a reflection of what oddsmakers think of Charlotte.

The Wiz enter play losers of four of their last five contests, including last time out against Brooklyn. Washington fell 113-107 to the Nets, wasting a massive 27 point, 19 rebound performance from Kristaps Porzingis.

Bradley Beal and Kyle Kuzma each poured in 25, meaning the Wizards top-three scorers accounted for 72% of their offense. Washington has struggled to get production from anyone other than those three all year, and that isn’t likely to change while Rui Hachimura, their fourth leading scorer, remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

The Wizards had no answer for Kevin Durant in their loss to Brooklyn, as they coughed up 39 points to the top-eight NBA MVP odds candidate. They allowed the Wiz to shoot 42% from three, while forcing only nine turnovers. Defense has actually been a strength for Washington for most of the year, and they should have a much easier time against the lowly Hornets.

Washington ranks 14th in defensive rating and 12th in opponent points per game. In two meetings with Charlotte this season, the Wizards have yielded an average of only 101 points per outing.

Charlotte Hornets Betting Analysis

After stringing together back-to-back upset victories over Philadelphia and Minnesota, the Hornets came crashing back down to earth last time out against Boston. The favorite in the NBA Championship odds blasted Charlotte 140-105, as the Hornets fell down by 27 after the first quarter.

Charlotte yielded a 59% field goal percentage, and a 46% mark from three. They coughed up 13 more triples than they made, but poor defensive play is nothing new to Hornets fans. Charlotte ranks bottom-nine in scoring defense and has surrendered 125+ points in half of their past eight outings.

Offensively, the Hornets 48% field goal percentage versus the Celts suggests they performed well, but their efficiency only increased after the game was well out of hand. For the season, Charlotte ranks last in offensive rating, and injuries are partly to blame.

Star point guard LaMello Ball (ankle) hasn’t played in two weeks, and will sit again on Friday. As will his backup Dennis Smith Jr. (ankle), and Gordon Heyward (shoulder). That means the offense is going to run through Terry Rozier. No offense to scary Terry, but he’s more of a heat check guy than a primary option. He’s shooting just 38% from the field this season, and 30% from three.

Wizards vs Hornets Prediction

With so many key injuries to the Hornets, it’s impossible to roll with them in this matchup. They’re absolutely abysmal on offense, and their defense will likely struggle to contain the Wizards “Big 3” just like they did in previous matchups.

Washington is 2-0 versus Charlotte this season, beating them twice when the Hornets were much healthier. The Wizards have held them below 42% shooting in both matchups, and there really isn’t a Charlotte player to fear.

NBA Bottom-5 ATS Home Records

Team Home ATS Record Cover % ATS +/-
New York Knicks 2-6-2 25.0% -3.3
Miami Heat 3-8-1 27.3% -2.6
Dallas Mavericks 3-8-1 27.3% -0.3
Charlotte Hornets 3-6-0 33.3% -1.2
Minnesota Timberwolves 4-8-0 33.3% -6.9

Washington hasn’t exactly been an ATS crusher away from home this season, but the Hornets have struggled badly to cover games at home. They’re 3-6 against the spread as a home ‘dog, which is one of the worst marks in the NBA.

Pick: Washington Wizards -3 (-110)
