Butler Outlook

The good news for Butler against Xavier was that it shot 50.0% (28 of 56) from the field. The bad for the Bulldogs is they allowed the Musketeers to shoot 55.1% (27 of 49).

Butler got strong offensive games from senior guards Aaron Thompson and Bryce Golden, who combined for 39 points while shooting 17 for 26. Thompson finished with 20 points and Golden had 19.

Thompson distributed, too.

Thompson is coming on strong from offseason shoulder surgery, scoring in double figures the last two games. He was under 10 points in eight of his first nine games this season.

Golden raised his scoring average to 10.4 with sixth double-digit effort in the last seven games. He reached double figures only once in the first six games.

Guard Jayden Taylor, a true freshman, is also scoring 10.4 points a game to tie for Golden for the team lead. Sophomore guard Chuck Harris is right behind at 10.3

Much of the difference against Xavier was three-point shooting. Butler was just 5 for 21 from beyond the arc for 23.8% while the Musketeers knocked down 45.5% (10 of 22).

Butler fell behind 42-31 by halftime and never got closer than seven points in the second half.

Butler could get senior forward Ty Groce (COVID-19 protocols) and senior wing Bo Hodges (knee) back Thursday. Groce missed the last two games while Hodges has yet to play this season.

A transfer from Eastern Michigan, Groce is averaging 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds. Hodges scored 8.2 points a game last season.

Georgetown Outlook

Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing was so upset about his team’s performance against Marquette that he abruptly left his post-game press conference and said legendary Hoyas coach John Thompson “must be rolling over in his grave.”

Thompson will miss this game because of COVID-19 protocols and assistant Louis Orr will serve as acting head coach.

Sophomore forward Collin Holloway had 17 points – his best scoring output since November — five rebounds and three assists. That was about the only bright spot, though, as Marquette shot almost 30 percentage points higher.

The Golden Eagles drained 59.1% (39 of 66) of their attempts while the Hoyas had a dismal percentage of 29.9 (20 of 67). Georgetown was also 4 of 18 (22.2%) from long distance.

Compounding matters, Georgetown was outrebounded 45-33 and turned the ball over 16 times.

Sophomore guard Dante Harris scored 15 points but got them the hard way. Harris made just 3 of 15 shots from the field, though was 9 for 10 at the free throw line while scoring in double figures for the ninth time in the last two games.

Harris has season averages of 13.0 points, 5.0 assists and 1.9 steals.

Freshman guard Aminu Mohammed has been Georgetown’s top player with averages of 14.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Last Friday, he had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Senior guard Donald Carey missed the game for undisclosed reasons. He is contributing 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game.

Senior wing Kaiden Rice is second on the team in scoring with 13.7 points a game.

Butler vs Georgetown Prediction.
