Castleton Comes Through

Junior forward Colin Castleton led the way Saturday as Florida got past visiting LSU 83-79 as a 2.5-point favorite. It was Gators’ second straight win.

Castleton had a team-high 21 points, 19 coming in the second half. The transfer from Michigan was limited to just two minutes in the first half because of foul trouble.

He was seven of 10 from the floor and made all seven free throw attempts in raising his season scoring average to 11.7. That is quite a jump for a player who scored just 99 points during his two seasons with the Wolverines.

Sophomore guard Tre Mann continued his fine season with a 19-point performance. He is averaging 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

Scottie Lewis, another sophomore guard, helped the seal the win by making five of six free throw attempts in the last 29 seconds. He finished with 17 points and is stuffing the stat sheet with averages of 14.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.5 blocked shots.

Junior forward Anthony Duraji had 16 points as Florida is getting contributions from numerous players to make up for the absence of junior forward Keyontae Johnson. The preseason SEC Player of the Year has been sidelined since collapsing in a game at Florida State on Dec. 12 and needing emergency medical attention.

Big Win for Bama

Alabama is riding the momentum of a 71-63 road upset of then-#7Tennessee on Saturday as a 10.5-point underdog.

It was the biggest win of Nate Oats’ two season as coach. It also marked the Crimson Tide’s first true road win over a top 10 team since 2004.

Senior guard John Petty Jr. hit three 3-pointers in the second half to help Alabama gain separation and finished with 19 points. He made all four shots from long range.

Freshman guard Joshua Primo, who just turned 18 two weeks ago, drained three of five 3-pointers on his way to 11 points. Alabama shot 50% from 3-point range, making 10 of 20 attempts.

Senior wing Herbert Jones also had 11 points and sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly finished with 10.

Alabama’s slogan for the 2020-21 season is “Blue Collar Basketball” and that is what it played against Tennessee. The Crimson Tide held the Volunteers to 32% shooting and no fast break points.

Like Florida, Alabama is balanced on offense. Sophomore guard Jaden Shackleford leads four players averaging double digits in points with 13.0 followed by Petty (12.9), Quinerly (12.8) and Jones (12.0).

Thriller Last Season

Florida has won three straight games against Alabama, including 104-98 in double overtime last season at home. The Gators failed to cover the 7.5-point spread in that one.

Lewis had a double-double off the bench for Florida with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Petty had 19 points and seven rebounds in a losing effort and Jones added 15 points and nine boards.

This season’s meeting might not be quite so thrilling. It still shapes up as a good ballgame that should go down to the wire, though there is a chance Alabama suffers a letdown after a big win.

The Pick: Florida +1.5 (-102)
