The Hawkeyes are off to a 4-0 start overall and 3-1 ATS.

Iowa More Than Garza

Luke Garza gets the largest share of attention for Iowa and understandably so. The senior center was the consensus national Preseason Player of the Year after winning the Big Ten Player of the Year award last season.

The 6-foot-11 center is having a great senior year so far, averaging 29.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots.

However, the Hawkeyes showed in its impressive 93-80 victory at home over No. 16 North Carolina on Tuesday as four-point favorites that they are more than just a one-man show.

Garza had a fine effort with 16 points and 14 rebounds – but he was just Iowa’s fourth-leading scorer.

Senior guard Jordan Bohannon led the way with 24 points, making seven three-pointers, and dishing out six assists. He has made a strong return following surgery on both hips last year.

Sophomore guard C.J. Fredrick added 21 points and junior wing Joe Weiskamp finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Both knocked down five threes as the Hawkeyes went 17 for 40 from long range.

That balance along with experience – Iowa has all five starters back from last season’s 20-11 team – is part of why Hawkeyes fans are dreaming of the school’s first Final Four appearance since 1980.

Coleman-Lands Shining at ISU

Jalen Coleman-Lands has been well-traveled in his college career. And productive, too.

The graduate senior guard is with his third college program, transferring to Iowa State for the 2020-21 season following two-year stints at Illinois and DePaul.

Coleman-Lands has scored 29 points in his first two games with the Cyclones to lead the team in scoring. He averaged 10.3 points a game as a freshman at Illinois in 2015-16 and 11.1 last season for DePaul.

Coleman-Lands is one of four Iowa State players with double-digit scoring averages. He is joined by junior guard Rasir Bolton (13.0), senior forward Solomon Young (13.0) and junior forward Javan Johnson (11.5), a Troy transfer.

Young poured in 24 points in Iowa State’s last game Dec. 2, though the Cyclones lost to visiting South Dakota State 71-68 as 1.5-point favorites. Johnson added 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and Coleman-Lands scored 12.

Injury Update

Iowa State sophomore guard Tre Jackson sustained a knee injury during the preseason. He is out indefinitely.

Coach Steve Prohm’s daughter Francie is apparently a big Jackson fan.

Jackson started 12 of 31 games last season, averaging 4.3 points.

Series History

Iowa has won three of the last four games in the series, including 84-68 on the road last season while favored by four points.

Garza led Iowa with 21 points and 11 rebounds as all five starters scored in double digits. Young had 10 points in 20 minutes for the Cyclones.

The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 46-27.

Look for Iowa’s dominance to continue this season as the Hawkeyes are the much better team in this rivalry game.

Pick: Iowa -14 (-110)
