Kansas Wins Without Big Man

Kansas was able to beat Oklahoma despite missing junior forward David McCormack, who is sitting out the tournament because of COVID-19 protocols.

The 6-foot-10 McCormack is averaging 13.4 points and 6.1 rebounds, ranking second on the team in both categories. He is also accounting for 28.8% of Kansas’ possessions and 29.8% of its shots.

Kansas went with a four-guard lineup and junior Ochai Agbaji thrived in that setup with a career-high 26 points.

Senior guard Marcus Garrett added 17 points.

It was just Agbaji’s second game with at least 20 points this season. He scored 23 on Dec. 17 in a 58-57 victory over Texas Tech.

The Jayhawks bolted to a 35-15 lead by halftime. Oklahoma cut the deficit to 62-59 with 3.5 minutes left but Kansas then outscored the Sooners 7-3 the rest of the way to hang on for its third straight win and eighth in nine games.

With McCormack sidelined, reserve senior forward Mitch Lightfoot came up big with 11 points in 20 minutes. Freshman guard Dajuan Harris Jr also turned in a strong performance off the bench with five assists and four of Kansas’ 12 steals.

Kansas, favored by two points, forced Oklahoma into a season-worst 18 turnovers and made 9 of 11 free throw attempts for 81.8%. The Jayhawks entered the game shooting 71.2% from the foul line, which was ranked just 172nd in the country.

Coleman Clutch for Texas

Senior guard Matt Coleman III made two free throws with 1.8 seconds to enable Texas to eke out the slight upset of Texas Tech as a 1.5-pound underdog.

Coleman had a game-high 19 points, his third-highest output of the season. Coleman’s six assists were also a game high.

Despite committing 20 turnovers, Texas won its fourth straight game.

Senior guard Jase Febres added 15 points, junior guard Andrew Jones finished with 11, and senior forward Jericho Sims and sophomore forward Kai Jones contributed 10 apiece.

Texas Tech seemed in control as it led 66-61 with two minutes remaining. However, Texas scored the game’s final six points as Kai Jones and Coleman made layups before Coleman drained the game-winning free throws.

Sims also had 11 rebounds and four blocked shots to finish with his third double-double and second in the last three games.

Texas made 11 of 26 three-point attempts for 42.3%.

Texas Turns Tables

Texas won both meetings against Kansas in the regular season, 84-59 on Jan. 2 on the road as a 4.5-point underdog and 75-72 in overtime on Feb. 23 at home as a three-point favorite. The Jayhawks had won 13 of the previous 14 games in the series.

Junior guard Courtney Ramey’s 18 points led five Texas scorers in double figures in the upset in Lawrence as he made 7 of 11 field goal attempts. The Longhorns shot 46.2% (12 of 26) from three-point range and Sims’ 12 rebounds helped them hold a 43-33 edge on the boards.

Kansas was led by freshman forward Jalen Wilson’s 20 points.

Ramey again led five Texas players in double figures with 15 points in the second matchup. Andrew Jones had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Coleman finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

Wilson had a double-double in a losing cause with 16 points and 13 rebounds while Agbaji scored 17 points.,

It is hard to imagine a team as talented as Kansas losing to the same opponent three times in one season.

Pick: Kansas +0.5 (-110)
