Kansas Betting Outlook

Junior forward Jalen Wilson is looking like an All-America candidate for Kansas, the defending national champion.

Wilson leads the Big 12 in scoring at 20.6 points a game and is second in rebounding with an 8.4 average. He is also averaging 2.9 assists and his Wooden Award odds are +1000.

Wilson has scored in double figures in every game.

Kansas is 38th nationally in field goal shooting (48.2%)  and 45th in three-point shooting percentage (37.6).

Guard Gradey Dick is one of the top freshmen in the nation, averaging 14.6 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Senior guard Kevin McCullar Jr.’s 2.5 steals a game lead the conference after he transferred from Big 12 rival Texas Tech. He is also fifth in rebounding at 7.2 a game while scoring 11.2 points and distributing 2.0 assists.

Junior guard Dajuan Harris Jr.’s 6.5 assists a game is second in the conference and he is fourth in steals at 2.1. Harris helps spearhead a defense allowing opponents to shoot 40%, the 46th-best mark in Division I.

Harris led the way with 18 points as Kansas ended Texas Tech’s 29-game home winning streak. He had a near-perfect shooting game, going 6 for 7 overall and 5 for 5 on three-pointers.

The Jayhawks shot 45.8% (11 of 24) from deep and held on despite being outscored 12-5 over the final 3:53.

Wilson added 16 points, six rebounds and three assists while sophomore forward KJ Adams Jr. finished with 14 points for eighth straight double-digit effort. Dick filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

West Virginia Betting Outlook

West Virginia has started conference play with back-to-back losses in a major rebuilding season. The Mountaineers return just 7.2% of their minutes played from 2021-22, the lowest mark in the nation.

Each of West Virginia’s three leading scorers is a senior transfer – guard Erik Stevenson (14.1), forward Tre Mitchell (13.3) and forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. (10.7).

Stevenson came from South Carolina and Mitchell previously played for Texas. Matthews returns to West Virginia, where he played three seasons, before transferring to Washington for one season.

Stevenson has a 51.4 field goal percentage that is fifth in the Big 12.

Stevenson’s importance showed in the loss at Oklahoma State when he had 17 points and three steals. He fouled out with 5:57 left and West Virginia leading 55-54. The Mountaineers were outscored 12-6 the rest of the way.

One of the fouls was for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Mitchell had 16 points and seven rebounds. He is averaging 5.4 rebounds a game.

West Virginia had a rough shooting night. The Mountaineers knocked down just 36.5% (19 of 52) of their field goal attempts, including 5 of 18 (27.8%) from long range.

That was likely an aberration, though, as West Virginia is 42nd in the nation in scoring (79.4) and 46th in field goal percentage (47.8).

Kansas vs West Virginia Prediction

Kansas has dominated the series in recent years, beating West Virginia three times last season while also winning eight of the last nine meetings and 12 of the past 14. The Jayhawks rolled to an 87-63 victory in last year’s Big Tournament as Wilson scored 15 points.

Look for Kansas to continue its dominance in this one despite West Virginia’s significant homecourt advantage.

Pick: Kansas -1 (-110)

Season record: 18-12 (+5.8 units) ATS, 0-3 (-3.0 units) ML
