Longwood will finally open the Atlantic Sun Conference portion of its schedule when it visits Radford at 6:30 p.m. ET Wednesday at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.

Because of COVID-19 issues with opponents, Longwood (8-5/0-0 Atlantic Sun/0-4 road) has yet to play inside the conference but has won four its last five games. The Lancers routed Pfeiffer, a Division III school, 109-69, last Wednesday.

Radford (5-9/1-1 Big South/4-1 home) has dropped five of its last six games, including being edged 73-72 by North Carolina A&T on Saturday at home.

Longwood Outlook

After spending three seasons in the ACC, two at Virginia Tech and one at Wake Forest, senior guard Isaiah Wilkins has shined following his transfer to Longwood.

Wilkins is averaging a team-high 12.1 points a game along with 5.7 rebounds. He scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 19 minutes against Pfeiffer.

Wilkins was 8 of 10 from the floor as he scored in double figures for the fifth time in six games.

Senior forward Zac Watson also reached a season best in scoring as he had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds. The 16 points matched Watson’s combined total in the previous three games.

Sophomore guard Justin Hill added 15 points and three steals and senior guard DeShaun Wade chipped in with 12 points.

Hill is having a fine all-round season with averages of 11.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists a game. Wade has a 10.3 scoring average.

Longwood has a fourth player with a double-digit scoring average in junior forward Leslie Nkereuwem (11.4).

Longwood shot 54.7% (41 of 75) last Wednesday and knocked down 12 of 25 (48.0%) attempts from three-point range. The Lancers also dominated the boards 52-31 and forced 19 turnovers.

Radford Outlook

Radford had plenty of chances to beat North Carolina A&T but couldn’t take advantage of opportunities in the game’s final minute.

Demetric Horton’s jumper with 1:08 left put North Carolina A&T ahead 73-72 and turned out to be the last points. Radford missed three potential game-winning field goal attempts after that.

Senior guard Josiah Jeffers led Radford with 18 points, five assists and four steals. He reached double figures for the second straight games after doing so just twice in the first 12 games this season.

Junior forward Dravon Mangum’s 17 points represented his best of the season as he hit four three-point shots. Mangum had totaled 13 points in the previous three games.

Senior guard Bryan Hart finished with 11 points. He has scored in double figures in three of the last four games to push his team-high average to 9.0 points. That comes a year after he scored just 3.6 points a game.

The Highlanders forced 15 turnovers but allowed North Carolina A&T to have a 56.8 (25 of 44) field goal percentage. The Aggies made 5 of 11 three-pointers for 45.5%.

Longwood vs Radford Prediction

Radford has won 10 straight games in the series, including posting a 62-53 victory at home Dec. 15, 2020 in the last meeting. Hill shined in a losing effort with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Longwood is playing well and should be fired up for its conference opener. Look for the Lancers to the end the long series losing streaak.
