Two hot teams meet when #25 Marquette visits #12 Xavier at 12 p.m. ET Sunday in a Big East game at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.

Marquette (14-4, 3-2 road, 6-1 Big East) extended its winning streak to five games by beating #6 Connecticut 82-76 on Wednesday. Xavier (14-3, 9-1 home, 6-0 Big East) edged Creighton 90-87 the same night for its 10th straight victory.

Marquette Betting Outlook

Marquette is developing a reputation as a second-half team. It has overcome halftime deficits in its last three games, including trailing Connecticut 37-33 at the break.

The Golden Eagles shot 65% from the field in the second half of those games.

Junior forward Oso Ighodaro provided late-game heroics against Connecticut by making four free throws in the last 36.8 seconds to ice the win. He entered the game shooting just 42.1% from the foul line this season after knocking down 73.8% of his free throws in 2021-22.

Ighodaro finished with a team-leading 19 points.

The Junior is having a fine season with averages of 11.9 points, 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds a game. He is second in the Big East in field goal percentage with a 64.7 mark.

Junior forward Olivier Maxence-Prosper added 17 points. Sophomore guard Kam Jones scored all 15 of his points after halftime.

Jones leads the team in scoring with a 16.1 average and Maxence-Prosper is averaging 14.7. Sophomore forward David Joplin is the fourth Marquette scoring in double digits at 10.2.

Marquette shot 50.8% (30 of 59) on Wednesday and forced Connecticut into 16 turnovers. The Golden Eagles are sixth in the nation in field goal percentage (50.2) and 13th in scoring (83.1).

Xavier Betting Outlook

Senior guard Souley Boum has been the Musketeers’ top player in coach Sean Miller’s return to Xavier after 12 seasons at Arizona.

A transfer from UTEP, Boum tops the Big East in scoring at 17.7 points a game. He is also averaging 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds.

Boum had a big game in the win over Creighton, including making four foul shots in the final five seconds to seal the victory. He finished with 26 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals and no turnovers.

It marked the eighth 20-point game of the season for Boum, who was just two points off his season high.

Junior guard Colby Jones had 20 points, the third time this season he has reached that mark but the first time since Nov. 27. Jones is filling the stat sheet with 14.1 points, 5.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game.

He stands third in the conference in assists.

Senior forward Jack Nunge had his fourth double-double of 2022-23 with 15 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. He is scoring 14.7 points and pulling down 7.5 rebounds a game.

Senior forward Jerome Hunter chipped in with 12 points off the bench as Xavier shot 50% (34 of 68) overall and 42.1% (8 of 19) from three-point range.

The Musketeers have five double-figure scorers as senior guard Adam Kunkel has a 10.0 average.

Xavier is third in the nation in field goal percentage (51%), fourth in three-point shooting (40.9%) and ninth in scoring (84.9). However, the Musketeers are 322nd in points allowed (75.1) and 328th in three-point defense (36.7%) while allowing 80 or more points five times this season.

Marquette vs Xavier Prediction

The teams are meeting for the first time this season and have split their last four games. This should be an entertaining matchup between two high-scoring teams.
