Heavy-hearted Michigan State returns to action for the first time since a fatal on-campus mass shooting when it visits Michigan at 8pm ET Saturday in a Big Ten game at the Crisler Center.

Michigan State (16-9, 4-4 road, 8-6 Big Ten) postponed its scheduled home game Wednesday against Minnesota a day after a gunman killed three people and wounded five others. The Spartans last played last Sunday when they routed Ohio State 62-41 in Columbus for their second straight win.

Michigan (14-12, 10-4 home, 8-7 Big Ten) has lost consecutive games following a three-game winning streak, including falling at Wisconsin 64-59 on Tuesday.

Fox will televise the game.

Michigan State Betting Outlook

A strong defensive effort led Michigan State over Ohio State on Sunday.

The Spartans limited the Buckeyes to 28.3% shooting (17-of-60), including 19% in the first half when Michigan State built a 27-14 lead at the break. Ohio State made just 6-of-29 (20.7%) three-pointers overall.

Senior forward Joey Hauser led Michigan State with 22 points as he shot 8-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-9 from distance. It was his second straight game with at least 20 points and his sixth of the season.

Hauser is averaging 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. He is just behind senior guard Tyson Walker (13.8) for the team scoring lead.

Walker added 10 points and three assists. Sophomore guard Jaden Akins contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

Michigan State attempted only one free throw. However, the Spartans ended the game on a 24-8 run to turn a 38-33 game with 11:24 left into a blowout.

Senior guard A.J. Hoggard is second in the Big Ten in assists with 5.8 a game. He is also averaging 12.1 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Michigan State is the 44th-best three-point shooting team in the nation at 37.0% but 277th in free throw percentage (67.9%). Defensively, the Spartans are 12th in three-point percentage (28.9%), 27th in overall field goal percentage (40.4%) and 47th in scoring (64.6).

Michigan Betting Outlook

Michigan held Wisconsin to 33.3% (22-of-66) shooting Tuesday and the Badgers missed their last 15 shots. The Wolverines were unable to rally for a victory, though, because of their own late-game shooting woes.

Michigan missed its last eight field goal attempts nine of its last 11. Meanwhile, Wisconsin went 10-of-12 from the foul line over the final 10:45 when it wasn’t scoring any baskets.

Sophomore guard Kobe Bufkin scored a team-high 21 points for Michigan, lifting his average for the season to 12.7 points a game. It was the fourth time Bufkin scored at least 20 points in 2022-23.

Junior center Hunter Dickinson notched his third double-double in the last four games – and ninth of the season — with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

He was better on the boards than as a prognosticator.

Dickinson has averages of 17.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots. He is fourth in the conference in rebounding and blocks and fifth in scoring and field goal percentage (55.9%).

Freshman guard Jett Howard has a 14.6 scoring average.

Junior forward Terrance Williams II missed the game with a deep knee bruise and is questionable for Saturday. He is scoring 6.8 points and pulling down 6.1 rebounds a game.

Michigan State vs Michigan Prediction

Michigan State has won three of its last four games from its in-state rival and seven of nine. The Spartans notched a 59-53 win at home on Jan. 7 as Hoggard had 15 points and six assists.

Look for Michigan to turn the table on a Michigan State team that could be understandably distracted after an emotional week.
