Michigan Wolverines Betting Trends

The Wolverines are coming off a tight 88-83 win over Eastern Michigan. Hunter Dickinson dominated for Michigan in that one and they needed everything he gave them. The 7’1 junior scored 31 points in 32 minutes, shooting 76.5% from the field.

His inside game has propelled Michigan to their first two wins and masked the deficiencies of this offense from behind the arc. Coming into Wednesday’s action against Pittsburgh, the Wolverines have shot just 28% from long distance, but an incredible 60.8% on two point field goals.

The big man is the main reason Howard’s team is one of those teams to think about picking in the odds to win March Madness. They could make a strong run based on his dominating interior presence, especially if they can find their stroke from outside considering the open looks they should get with all the double teams Dickinson will face.

Pittsburgh Panthers Betting Trends

After a great opening season win, the Panthers got pounded and lost by 25 points to West Virginia. On the positive side, reinforcements look like their on the way for Pittsburgh.

Center John Hugley, last year’s leading scorer and rebounder sat out the first two games of the regular season with a knee injury but is nearing a return, according to Pitt head coach Jeff Capel. Hugley earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors last season after averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

The Panthers also have their second leading scorer, Jamarius Burton (12.4 ppg) back from last year as well. He is averaging 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game early in this campaign. The tandem combined for 42.9 percent (845-of-1969) of the Panthers’ scoring a year ago.

Michigan vs Pittsburgh Prediction

Michigan definitely has a leg up in this contest, but the return of Hugley should help to somewhat contain Dickinson in this matchup. Without him, the Michigan center would have no problem doing what he wants in the paint.

2022-23 KenPom College Basketball Rankings

Team Rank Record Adjusted Offensive Efficiency Adjusted Defensive Efficiency
Michigan Wolverines 30 2-0 110.8 (20th) 93.1 (53rd)
Pittsburgh Panthers 102 1-1 103.3 (112th) 96.8 (99th)

If the Panthers can somewhat quiet Dickinson on offense, then they’ll be able to keep this contest close. Michigan’s depth has to be a concern, as Juwan Howard used just eight players in his last game with three players producing 12 points.

It seems like they’re too reliant on their big center so far and their outside shooting isn’t something they can depend on yet. They’re also hitting just 63.3% from the charity stripe.

The Panthers are 9-7 all-time against teams ranked number 20 in the AP Poll and with the return of Hugley, an upset could be in the making here, but we feel the best bet and safer play is to take Pittsburgh to cover the spread and keep this one close.

Pick: Pittsburgh +9.5 (-108)
