Minnesota Road Woes Continue

Minnesota’s top two scorers, junior guard Marcus Carr and junior center Liam Robbins were held in check by Maryland. Carr had nine points and Robbins managed just two on 1-of-8 shooting.

Carr is averaging 19.4 points, 5.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds. He has failed to score in double figures just twice in 21 games this season.

Robbins has averages of 12.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots. He is also drawing 6.0 fouls per 40 minutes.

Minnesota shot just 32.3% (19-of-59) from the floor, including 28.6% (8-of -28) from 3-point range. The Gophers, who quickly fell behind 16-3, were also outrebounded 37-33. Minnesota cut the deficit to six points in the second half but got no closer.

Freshman guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. continues to emerge as a scoring threat and had a team-high 14 points. He has reached double digits in three of his last four games after doing so just twice in his first 17.

Junior guard Gabe Kalscheur is scoring 9.2 points a game and shooting 86% on free throw attempts. Senior forward Brandon Johnson has an 8.7 scoring average and just 14 turnovers in 506 minutes played.

Turnovers, Foul Shooting Cost Indiana

Indiana did not give itself much of a chance of upsetting Ohio State as the Buckeyes turned 15 turnovers in 21 points. The Hoosiers also made just 12-of-22 foul shots (54.5%).

Sophomore guard Armaan Franklin had four of the giveaways, three coming in the game’s opening moments. He also had a season-low three points.

Sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis again shined for Indiana with 23 points. It was 11th game with 20+ points this season.

KenPom ranks Jackson-Davis as the nation’s sixth-best player. He is averaging 19.5 points, 6.9 and 1.6 blocks while accounting for 29.8% of Indiana’s possessions and drawing 7.0 fouls per 40 minutes.

Sophomore guard Jerome Hunter added 10 points, just the second time he has scored in double digits this season.

A lack of scoring punch beyond Jackson-Davis has been a problem for Indiana. Franklin (12.1) and senior guard Aljami Durham (11.2) are the other two Hoosiers with double-figure averages.

Franklin’s season-low three points came after he went off for a season-high 23 in a win over Northwestern in the Hoosiers’ previous game.

Hoosiers Swept Last Season

The teams are meeting for the lone time this season after Indiana beat Minnesota twice in 2019-20. The Hoosiers won 68-56 on the road as 5.5-point underdogs and 72-67 at home as four-point favorites.

Jackson-Davis dominated in both games. He scored 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the first matchup and finished with 18 points and 10 boards in the rematch.

Indiana has won four of the last five games in the series. While that and Minnesota’s road woes seem to dictate playing Indiana, look for the Gophers to keep it close against the Hoosiers, whose scoring is spotty other than Jackson-Davis.

Pick: Minnesota +4.5 (-118)
