Ohio State is a slim 1.5-point favorite over Purdue in a battle of Big Ten contenders. The Buckeyes are 2-3 SU and 3-1-1 ATS in the five series meetings since 2020 and are 5-1 SU and 3-3 ATS in the last six when favored at home, although that has happened only twice since 2015. Purdue is 7-3 SU and 3-6-1 ATS in the last 10 series meetings.

The Boilermakers are 4-9-1 ATS this season, among the worst records in Division I, and have failed to cover their last eight after beating the number against West Virginia, Gonzaga and Duke in late November. The Boilermakers are 0-2 ATS on the road. Ohio State is 7-6 ATS, 4-3 ATS at home.

Purdue Looks to Rebound

The Boilermakers enter after their first loss of the season (and their second loss inas many seasons) to Rutgers, a game in which leading national player of the candidate 7’4 center Zach Edey had early foul trouble and the Boilermakers fell behind by as many as 10 points before falling 65-64 on a three-pointer with 13.3 seconds remaining. Edey played 28 minutes, four below his season average, although he did have his 11th double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Edey is averaging 21.7 points and 13.4 rebounds, the only player in Division I averaging a double-double, and help is coming from freshman shooting guard Fletcher Loyer, who is averaging 12.1 points and 2.0 three-pointers per game.  He has become the second option as coach Matt Painter likes to run him off screens to create space.

Loyer is second among Big Ten newcomers in scoring and third with 28 made threes. Freshman Braden Smith (8.9 points, 3.6 assists) and reserve shooting guard Brandon Newman (8.2 points, 2 threes) chip in, but this is Edey’s team. With Edey holding forth, the Boilermakers are limiting opponents to 38.9 percent shooting from the field and have a plus-12 rebound margin.

Ohio State Finds New No. 1

Physical freshman wing Brice Sensabaugh has become the early go-to guy for the Buckeyes, whose lost top scorers E.J. Liddell and Malachi Branham to the 2022 NBA draft. Sensabaugh, 6’6 and 235,  is averaging  15.9 points and 4.5 rebounds and has shown the ability to score from inside and out. Sensabaugh is shooting 54.6 percent from the floor and has made 27 of 58 threes, 46.8 percent). The Buckeyes are 4-1 since Sensabaugh replaced Isaac Likekele in the starting lineup.

Forward 6’7 Justice Sueing (13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds) and post 6’8 Zed Key (13.4 points, 8.4 rebounds) provide support, and Sueing’s return from an abdominal injury that limited him to two games last year has been a plus. Another freshman, guard 6’2 Bruce Thornton, is averaging 10.4 points and 3.5 assists as the principal playmaker. Sensabaugh and Thornton were top 50 high school recruits.

Purdue vs Ohio State Prediction

No. 1 Purdue indeed may be the best team in Division I, and the Boilermakers seem as good a choice as any right now to land No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The public has bought into the Boilermakers so heavily, however, that it is difficult to back them day-to-day.  A tough matchup in Columbus is not the time to buck Purdue’s 0-8 ATS run over the last six weeks. Take the resurgent Buckeyes.

  • Pick: Ohio State -1.5 (-114)
  • Season CBK: 14-5 ATS
