Two teams needing as many wins as they can get to bolster their NCAA Tournament resumes square off when Saint Louis hosts Richmond at 7:00 pm ET Friday in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Chaifetz Arena.

Richmond (13-5 overall, 6-3 A-10) has given itself some hopes for the tourney by winning two games in a row and four of its last five.

Conversely, Saint Louis’s hopes are fading as the Billikens have lost back-to-back games following a four-game winning streak to fall to 11-5 and 4-4. The Billikens, though, are favored against the Spiders.

Richmond Knocks Off A-10 Leader

Richmond knocked Massachusetts off from the top of the conference standings Tuesday night with a 79-65 win at home as a nine-point favorite.

Senior guard Blake Francis scored a game-high 20 points, the fifth time he has reached that mark this season. He is averaging 16.6 points, playing 88.5% of the Spiders’ minutes, and has scored in double figures in 17 of 18 games this season.

Senior Nathan Cayo added 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his second-best scoring game of the season. He has been in double figures in five of the last six games and has a 12.2 average.

Senior forward Grant Golden finished with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. He has been one of the best all-round players in the A-10 with averages of 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Filling the stat sheet in numerous categories was senior guard Jacob Gilyard. He contributed nine points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals while running an offense that had just six turnovers.

Gilyard is averaging 11.4 points, 5.3 assists and an amazing 3.6 steals. He has at least four steals in 10 of 18 games.

A fifth Richmond player scoring in double figures is sophomore forward Tyler Burton at 12.3 He is also pulling down 7.5 rebounds a game.

Saint Louis Loses Heartbreaker

Saint Louis dropped a 67-65 decision at VCU on Tuesday night, getting knocked off as a 3.5-point favorite.

VCUs Adrian Baldwin Jr. made two free throws with four seconds left to break a 65-all tie. The Billikens’ Javonte Perkins then missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer that could have won the game.

Senior forward Hasahn French scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Saint Louis. It was just the fourth time he reached double digits this season and he had a total of 28 points in the last six games.

Double-doubles have become commonplace for senior guard Jordan Goodwin, who notched his 12th of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds while adding three assists.

Goodwin is averaging a double-double for a second straight season with 14.7 points and 10.5 rebounds. In 2019-20, those numbers were 15.5 and 10.4.

He even finds time for pushups.

Despite his end-of-game miss, Perkins had a solid performance with 16 points and seven rebounds. The senior wing leads the team in scoring with a 17.1 average while taking 29.6% of Saint Louis’ shots when he is on the court and shooting 41.3% on 3-pointers and 87.0% from the foul line.

Sophomore guard Yuri Collins is handing out 6.0 assists a game.

Series Tilts Toward SLU

Saint Louis has won four of the last five games in the series, including a 74-58 upset last season at Richmond as a 5.5-point underdog.

Goodwin scored 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Billikens, who shot 50.9% (28 of 55). Richmond was just 4 of 21 (19.0%) on 3-pointers and 23 for 58 (39.7%) overall.

However, this season, Richmond ranks 22nd in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com, with 113.5 points per 100 possessions. Look for that balanced offense to help the Spiders keep things close on the road.
