Two of those double-digit seeds will actually square off in one of Monday’s games, as Abilene Christian and UCLA are both in the running for this year’s Cinderella label.

Double-Digit Seeds Seek Sweet 16 Berth

The 14-seed Wildcats squeaked by Texas as 8.5-point underdogs to earn their first NCAA Tournament win in school history. They’re catching 4.5-points against the 11-seed Bruins, who surprised everybody by upsetting Michigan State in a First Four game, and then handling BYU.

They’ll clash on the East Region’s side of the draw, and there’s a possibility that one of those two programs could face another double-digit seed in the Sweet 16. 10-seed Maryland will have to upset 2-seed Alabama as a 5.5-point underdog in order for that to happen, but the Terrapins certainly appear up for the challenge.

They crushed UConn in the First Round as a short underdog, shooting 51.2% from the field, and 50% from three, while limiting the Huskies to 32.3% from the field.

The other double-digit seed looking to advance is Ohio. The 13-seed Bobcats wiped out Virginia in the First Round as a 7-point underdog, and can make it back to the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in school history by knocking out 5-seed Creighton. Ohio has won 10 of its last 11 overall, and is catching 5.5-points versus the Bluejays.

Bulldogs Are the Biggest Favorite

Not surprisingly, Gonzaga is the biggest favorite of the Second Round, giving 14.5 points to Oklahoma in the West Region’s 1 vs 8 matchup.

The undefeated Bulldogs hammered Norfolk State by 43 points in the First Round, easily covering as 33.5-point favorites, and winning for the 24th straight time by double-digits.

Oklahoma meanwhile, won and covered as a short underdog against Missouri on Saturday, earning a victory for just the second time in its last six games. De’Vion Harmon, the team’s second leading scorer, remains for the Sooners, and being shorthanded versus the best team in college basketball is not a recipe for success.

USC Is the Lone Lower Seed Favored

Many pegged 11-seed Drake as a sleeper in the West Region after winning a First Four game, but 6-seed USC squashed that notion in the First Round. The Trojans dominated the Bulldogs, winning comfortably as a 6.5-point favorite, and will now face 3-seed Kansas. Despite being the lower seed, USC is actually a slight 1-point favorite.

The Trojans are the lone lower seed to be favored on Monday’s slate, but the advanced stats agree with the oddsmakers’ decision. USC is rated nine spots higher in KenPom’s rankings, and KP’s model is projecting a 2-point win for the Trojans. USC’s size in the front court is a nightmare to handle, and the Jayhawks could struggle to shut down the Trojans’ twin towers Evan and Isaiah Mobley.

On the bright side for Kansas, third leading scorer Jalen Wilson is slated to return after sitting out the Jayhawks’ Fist Round win over Eastern Washington due to COVID.
