Vols’ Offense Disappears

Despite being a three-point favorite, Tennessee lost at LSU 78-65 on Saturday.

Tennessee was down by just four points, 50-46, with 12 minutes left. However, the Volunteers made just six field goals the rest of the way and LSU stretched its lead as big as 17.

Freshman guard Jaden Springer shined again for Tennessee with 21 points. He has scored 20-plus points in three straight games – averaging 24.7 – after doing so only once in his first 14 games.

Springer (12.2) and fellow freshman Keon Johnson (10.1) are the only two Tennessee players with double-digit scoring averages. Johnson, also a guard, has scored in double figures in four straight games after reaching that mark five times in his 15 games. Johnson scored 10 against LSU.

Sophomore guard Santiago Vesconi added 13 points. He has scored 32 points in his last two games after totaling 31 in his previous six games.

Tennessee has failed to score more than 65 points in any of its conference losses and shot 36% Saturday.

Senior forward John Fulkerson and junior guard Victor Bailey Jr. are both slumping.

Fulkerson has averaged just 5.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in his last seven games and did not start against LSU. He posted averages of 12.2 and 6.2 in the first 12 games of the season.

Here is Fulkerson when things are going well.

Bailey averaged 13.4 points and shot 48.3% on 3-pointers in the first nine games. Those figures have dropped to 6.2 and 27.6% in the last 10 games.

Tennessee is third in the nation in defensive efficiency, allowing 87.3 points per 100 possessions, according to KenPom. However, the Volunteers have given up an average of 66.3 in their last five conference game after surrendering 52.7 in their first seven.

Struggling South Carolina

South Carolina’s losing ways continued Saturday when it dropped an 81-74 decision to Mississippi at home as a one-point favorite. The Gamecocks are shooting 38% and allowing 79 points a game during their losing streak.

Junior guard AJ Lawson led South Carolina with 22 points, though he was just 4-of-12 on 3-pointers. He has scored at least 20 points in four of his last five games and has a season average of 17.9 along with 1.6 steals a game.

Lawson has struggled in four career games against Tennessee, scoring 31 points on 10-of-36 shooting for 27.8%.

South Carolina forced Ole Miss into 20 turnovers and had 14 steals, including three by junior forward Justin Minaya. However, the Rebels still shot 50% while South Carolina turned the ball over 19 times and shot 40%.

Sophomore forward Wildens Leveque had 13 points for just his third double-digit game of the season.

Sophomore guard Trae Hannibal scored a career-high 12 points in 18 minutes of reserve action.

Fulkerson’s Wake Up Call?

Perhaps facing South Carolina will spark Fulkerson, who had 40 points and 19 rebounds last season when Tennessee split two games with the Gamecocks.

The Volunteers won 56-55 at home as seven-point favorites and South Carolina took the rematch 63-61 as three-point picks in Columbia.

Tennessee has been struggling offensively but South Carolina’s slumping defense is the perfect tonic for the Volunteers to break out of their doldrums.
