Boise State Wants Back In Bowl Picture

Coming off a mediocre 7-5 season, Boise State would like to put 2021 behind them. The Broncos and second-year head coach Andy Avalos want to get back to that level of Bryan Harsin and Chris Petersen who regularly guided Boise State to ten-win seasons and bowl wins.

Boise State wants to get back to that level but knows it will not be easy. They start the season at +110 in the Mountain West title odds, right at the top ahead of Air Force and Fresno State.

Though they took some hits in the transfer and graduation window, Boise State could still be closer to that 12th-ranked defense from last season. They allowed just 19 points per game. The Broncos were one very stout defense that just yielded a mere 206.9 yards passing. Even their run defense gave up a respectable four yards a game.

What was a bit stranger last season was that the Broncos were better on the road than expected. Boise State went 4-2 away from home. Their real problems were at home where .500 was the best they could come up with. The team looks stronger and ready to take a run at the Mountain West championship this year.

On offense, this is it for fifth-year senior Hank Bachmeier. It is his time to lead a talented up-and-coming Broncos team to a potential nine or ten-win season.

The unit was worse against the run than the pass even. The Broncos managed just 29 points per game last season but did improve on the trenches. That should give Bachmeier more time to find his targets and boost the Boise State offense.

Oregon State Tries To Continue Home Dominance

Head coach Jonathan Smith will look to make some improvements with an Oregon State team that showed flashes of brilliance, especially at home (6-0) but struggled on the road. Chance Nolan and company got to a bowl game but were stymied by Utah State.

The Beavers did some nice things offensively. Nolan had 19 touchdowns to ten interceptions and ran for nearly 300 yards to go with almost 2,700 in the air. The question is can they be a little more prolific in a Pac-12 conference where scoring some more points might help a lot.

There is one weird wrinkle with games at Reser Stadium this season unlike seasons past. It is significant.

Can Smith and Nolan still be as good without that intimidating student section and stadium setup? They get a huge test in Boise State, who makes an argument to be in the top-25 (got five votes).  The defense they are playing in Week 1 will cause some fits. Boise State is returning 20 of their top 22 tacklers from 2021. Oregon State may have problems in the trenches.

Oregon State’s projected NCAAF win total of 6.5 feels pretty accurate. Given their schedule and ability to play better as the season goes on, six or seven wins is very possible.

Boise State vs Oregon State Prediction

ESPN’s Power Football Index called for Boise State to be a Mountain West contender and favorite because of their balance.

Boise State could very well hit the 30-35 point range if their offensive line comes together even a bit. Their defense is known.

Oddsmakers may be underestimating Boise State on the road. This game opened at 3.5 and has crept back to 2.5. Take Boise State with the points and outright as well.

Pick: Boise State (+2.5)
