Duquesne Is A Road Underdog

Coming off a solid 7-3 season, Duquesne has not quite gotten off to the start it expected The Dukes and head coach Jerry Schmitt had quite the rough start before rebounding at home against Thomas More last week. In their 34-14 victory, Duquesne jumped out to a 24-0 lead after three quarters and never looked back. Though they did yield two late touchdowns, the game was never in doubt for the Dukes.

Duquesne received little positive from the books this week. The FCS team did go 5-2 in the conference last year and start conference play after traveling to Hawaii.

Despite their FCS status, Duquesne will be playing one of the worst teams defensively in FBS this season. Hawaii is giving up nearly 540 yards a game defensively. Considering the Dukes average just 333.7, that might be a bit of a boost this week. It will be something to see if Duquesne can generate a rushing attack given that Hawaii was allowing 271 yards a contest in the early going.

So, the Dukes offensively are scoring less than 20 points a game. Joe Mischler has been serviceable at quarterback but the running core is gaining just over four yards per carry. Duquesne might be able to flex its offensive muscle.

On defense, the Dukes may have some issues with Hawaii but then again the offenses overall have been pretty even. The Rainbow Warriors only net about three yards per contest more.

The Dukes have yielded 92 points through three games. Overall, it could be worse.

Hawaii Wants To Get Closer To Winning

Head coach Timmy Chang knew this was going to be quite a process. The losses have piled up to the tune of three and there is a possibility of quite a few more. The Rainbow Warriors have a point differential of -131 already.

Hawaii has waffled on a little of everything and started poorly at home losing to Vanderbilt 63-10. That set the tone for losing badly to Western Kentucky by 32 and then by 46 on the road last week to the Michigan Wolverines. The contests do not get any easier as they travel to New Mexico State and San Diego State to start their Mountain West Conference schedule

Can Joey Yellen and the offense move the ball through the air to set up the run better? Being at home helps, but the mistakes and breakdowns over the last three weeks have been eye-opening on both sides of the ball. The Rainbow Warriors may have a tough time getting momentum rolling. Scoring just 37 points after three weeks makes this one of the most difficult games to figure out. There is hope with this game being homecoming and Hawaii did win the last four of those.

Hawaii’s projected NCAAF win total of 4.5 is trending downward. The under at even lower numbers may be worth a look. Hawaii might win one or two games this season.

Duquesne vs Hawaii Prediction

ESPN’s Power Football Index expects Duquesne to be in the middle of the NEC while Hawaii occupies the basement of the MWC.

Both teams could score a little more this week as the over could be in play.

Oddsmakers may be underestimating both teams here. Take Duquesne with the points.

Pick: Duquesne +8 (-110)
