Clemson Has Seen It All Before

Coming off an “off” 10-3 season, Clemson already has a chance to go 5-0 on the young season. The Tigers and head coach Dabo Swinney had quite the adventure against Wake Forest last week. In their 51-45 victory over the Demon Deacons, Clemson had an answer for every Wake Forest offensive surge. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei has looked every part the Heisman candidate he was supposed to be last year. He threw for 371 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 52 more.

Clemson still is fifth in the college polls. Their odds have shortened more to -150 in the ACC Title odds, which still ranks first.

Their list of wins is quite something. Like we said above, Clemson considers a ten-win season an off year while a team like NC State would be absolutely delighted with ten wins. It is why the Tigers have seen it all before. Also, there are the weather conditions which could be wet to downright ugly. Winds could be in the 20-30 mph range in the upstate of South Carolina with temperatures in the 50’s. A few years back, Clemson routed Notre Dame in such a scenario.

So, it is safe to say not to expect 51 points here from Clemson on Saturday night. Even if the rains are not as fierce as expected, the weather and conditions will be less than ideal. No one is quite sure where Ian (now a major hurricane) will be.

There are no current plans to reschedule this game at this time. Florida’s home game has been rescheduled to Sunday against Eastern Washington.

On offense, the key will be how D.J. Uiagalelei and the running backs control the ball. Again, with slick and sloppy conditions expected, ball handling will be at a premium. With what is at stake, expect hitting on both sides of the scrimmage to be vicious.

The defense will be again challenged by NC State to a point but again, the home advantage could play a big role here.

NC State Wants Respect

Head coach Dave Doeren will look to beat another ranked team on Saturday and one that NC State has had numerous losses to in its past. More importantly, a win would put NC State halfway to ten wins — a mark it has not seen since 2002. That year, Chuck Amato and the Wolfpack went to the Gator Bowl and beat Notre Dame.

The Wolfpack nearly stumbled out of the blocks against East Carolina. They narrowly avoided disaster with a 21-20 win. Since then, they have won three straight games including a 27-14 triumph against Texas Tech. Saturday marks the first game this year against a top-25 opponent and of course, it would have to be Clemson.

Can Devin Leary and Demie Sumo lead the way for the offense in what is going to be a raucous environment? Leary has thrown for nine touchdowns to two interceptions this year. Sumo has explosive rushing ability and three touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards a carry. The defense is the one that could be tested. They have allowed 11.8 points per game (8th in the nation) but again have not played a Clemson.

North Carolina State’s projected preseason NCAAF win total of 8.5 is looking like it will cash the over.

Clemson vs NC State Prediction

ESPN’s Power Football Index projects Clemson and NC State to be the top two teams in the ACC.

Both teams are not scoring 30 points this week.

This may be too big a moment for the Wolfpack, as Clemson can win this by more than a touchdown.

Pick: Clemson -6.5 (-110)
