Sooners Remain Undefeated

Oklahoma remains undefeated entering the Red River Showdown against Texas in Week 6. The Sooners advanced to 5-0 on the season with a 37-31 victory over Kansas State in Week 5. QB Spencer Rattler played his best game of the season, while running back Kennedy Brooks racked up 91 yards on the ground.

Oklahoma has been finding ways to win games, but they haven’t all been pretty. The Sooners have failed to cover the spread in three consecutive victories over Nebraska, West Virginia and Kansas State. The only time OU covered the number this season was against Western Carolina in Week 2 as 52.5-point favorites.

Rattler’s impressive performance against Kansas State was crucial for the Sooners entering Red River week. The second-year starter struggled at home against WVU last weekend, which led to Oklahoma fans booing him and chanting for backup Caleb Williams to enter the game. Rattler finished strong against the Mountaineers and has now completed 37 of his last 41 passes.

Texas Runs On Bijan

Texas is 4-1 on the season entering a pivotal Big 12 showdown with Oklahoma. The Longhorns got a monstrous performance from their offensive catalyst Bijan Robinson in Week 5 against TCU. The junior running back rushed for 216 yards and two TDs to lead the Longhorns to a 32-27 victory.

Robinson has simply been outstanding for Texas this season, rushing for 652 yards and seven TDs on 105 carries. The Longhorns have won three consecutive games against Rice, Texas Tech and TCU after suffering an upset loss at Arkansas in Week 2. Steve Sarkisian’s team is an impressive 4-1 ATS this season.

Texas quarterback Casey Thompson is 3-0 as a starter, although he hasn’t been counted on heavily due to the Longhorns’ dominant ground game. The main concern for Texas remains defense, as the Longhorns are allowing close to 400 yards per game. Arkansas, in particular, was able to rush for over 300 yards against their run defense.

Expected Line Movement

The Red River Showdown has produced some barn-burners of late. The two teams have alternated covering the spread over the last four years. Oklahoma covered as small favorites in a 53-45 OT thriller last season, while Texas covered as 11.5-point underdogs in a 34-27 OU victory two years ago.

Texas has been more explosive offensively this season, but Oklahoma has been more sound defensively. The key matchup will be Robinson and the Longhorns’ ground game going up against a Sooners’ rush defense allowing just 84 yards per game. OU has won three straight in this rivalry in part due to their ability to shutdown Texas’ ground game. Can they keep it going?

Oklahoma had been faded by the public in recent weeks, which means money is likely going to come in on Texas. The Longhorns have covered the spread in five of the last seven Red River games in Dallas. With Texas boasting one of the country’s most electrifying running backs, this game could be close to a pick’em come kickoff.
