Opening College Football Week 2 Odds, Lines, Spreads, and Early Predictions

Week 1 of the CFB season provided a little bit of everything from great games to major upsets to outstanding individual performances.

It might be difficult to top that excitement in Week 2, but there are some intriguing games on the schedule.

Topping the list is #11 Oregon (1-0) coming across the country to visit #4 Ohio State (1-0) on Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. The Ducks are favored to win the Pac-12 while the Buckeyes are the choices to again capture the Big Ten title.

Ohio State is a substantial favorite in the Week 2 College Football odds.

The stakes have rarely been higher in the Cy-Hawk rivalry than when #7 Iowa State (1-0) hosts #18 Iowa (1-0) on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. Both in-state teams harbor hopes of winning their conference title, the Cyclones attempting to knock off Oklahoma in the Big 12 and the Hawkeyes looking to unseat Ohio State in the Big Ten.

O What a Matchup in Columbus

Ohio State has opened as a 14-point favorite over Oregon after defeating Minnesota 45-31 on the road Thursday in its opener. C.J. Stroud passed for 294 yards and four touchdowns in his debut and coach Ryan Day remained unbeaten in Big Ten play.

The Buckeyes had two 70-plus-yard scores in the opener, one on a run off right end by Miyan Williams and one on a third-down screen to true freshman TreVeyon Henderson. Day, starting his third full year, is 24-2 overall and 16-0 in conference games.

Chris Olave had touchdown catches of 38 and 61 yards, and Garrett Wilson scored on a 56-yard reception that gave Ohio State the lead for good at 24-21 midway through the third quarter. Less than three minutes later, Haskell Garrett grabbed a fumble from a strip-sack that Zach Harrison delivered on Tanner Morgan and ran it in for a 32-yard touchdown.

Anthony Brown scored on a 30-yard quarterback keeper with 2:57 left and Oregon survived visiting Fresno State 31-24 on Saturday in its opener.

Oregon jumped to a 21-6 lead, but Fresno State scored two straight touchdowns to tie it midway through the third quarter, then took the lead early in the fourth on Abraham Montano’s field goal.

A fumble recovery gave Oregon the ball at the Fresno State 32, but the Ducks settled for Camden Lewis’ 25-yard field goal to tie it before Brown’s go-ahead touchdown.

The spread is high for a game between two of the better teams in the country. However, Stroud’s debut showed Ohio State is a legitimate national title contender ready to steamroll just about any team in its path and ready to cover the 14 points in this one.

Cy-Hawk Mania

Iowa State has been installed as a four-point favorite over Iowa despite a lackluster 16-10 victory over Northern Iowa at home on Saturday.

Datrone Young had a big interception with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter to avoid becoming the just the second top-10 team to lose to a team from the FCS. Michigan lost to Appalachian State in 2007.

Brock Purdy completed 21 of 26 passes for 197 yards, but the Cyclones were kept off-balance by a defense that returned all of its starters. Breece Hall, who led the nation with nine 100-yard games last year, was held to 69 yards on 23 carries.

Riley Moss returned two first-half interceptions for touchdowns and Iowa rolled to a 34-7 victory over visiting Indiana on Saturday.

Iowa intercepted three of Michael Penix, Jr.’s passes and had a fourth wiped out by a roughing-the-passer call.

Tyler Goodson rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes. Spencer Petras had a 9-yard touchdown run and completed 13 of 27 passes for 145 yards as Iowa won its seven consecutive game dating to last season.

It’s understandable why Iowa is favored at home. However, the Hawkeyes were the much better team in Week 1, is more than capable of winning in Ames and look like a live dog.

Out of Line

Another interesting matchup between Pac-12 and Big Ten teams comes Saturday night at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor when Michigan (1-0) hosts #20 Washington (0-1). The Wolverines are a 4.5-point favorite.

Michigan has clearly been a disappointment during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure as coach. However, the Wolverines did look good Saturday in dispatching Western Michigan 47-14 in their opener.

Wide receiver Ronnie Bell had a 76-yard touchdown reception and a 31-yard punt return before injuring his right leg in the second quarter and leaving the game. Blake Corum had 111 rushing yards and scored two TDs.

Washington, meanwhile, was stunned by FCS school Montana 13-7 at home Saturday. The Huskies became the first ranked FBS team to lose to an FCS opponent in five years.

With Washington trailing by six points, Dylan Morris was incomplete on fourth-and-2 with 1:33 left. Given another chance, the Huskies got to the 43 but Morris was intercepted by Marcus Welnel with 31 seconds remaining.

It might be unwise to overreact to one loss, but it feels like Washington should be bigger underdogs than 4.5 points and the line is likely to move.
