Chargers Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Win Over Packers

With last week’s victory over Green Bay as a 4-point home underdog, Los Angeles has now recorded consecutive straight up wins for the first time this season, keeping the team’s playoff hopes alive going into Thursday night’s Chargers vs Raiders matchup at RingCentral Coliseum.

Sporting a 4-5 SU record, the Chargers sit just a half-game back of the second-place Raiders in the AFC West standings, and just 1.5 games back of Indianapolis in the hunt for the second AFC wild card. And while Los Angeles has produced a middling 2-2 SU record on the road this season, it has impressed in recent road dates with divisional rivals, going 4-1 SU and ATS in its past five. That run includes a pair of SU and ATS victories in Oakland, with the Chargers holding the Raiders to just 22 total points in those contests.

Even with a losing record, the Chargers have managed to limit opponents to 20 or fewer points in five of their nine outings, and have surrendered just 18.7 points per game this season.

Those stingy results extend a trend that has continued all season. Even with a losing record, the Chargers have managed to limit opponents to 20 or fewer points in five of their nine outings, and have surrendered just 18.7 points per game this season, good for eighth overall in the NFL.

Rivers Shines on Shaky Offense

The Chargers have struggled to maintain momentum on offense this season, scoring an average of just 20.3 points per game this season. Slow starts have been a problem for Los Angeles, which has scored first just once in its past five contests and taken a half-time lead into the locker room on just two occasions during that stretch. Despite those offensive struggles, quarterback Philip Rivers continues to rack up impressive numbers and arrives in Oakland with a league-best 2,609 passing yards.

Rivers has also compiled a steady track record of success in previous visits to Oakland. The 37-year-old has led the Chargers to victory in nine of 13 career road dates with the Raiders, while tossing 24 total touchdown passes during that stretch, including seven total scoring passes over his past three visits to the Coliseum.

Jacobs Providing Raiders with Spark

The Raiders return to action on Thursday looking to build on last weekend’s 31-24 win over the visiting Detroit Lions as 2.5-point home chalk. The victory snapped a two-game SU slide, and also marked the Raiders third SU win in four home contests this season. Oakland has also been a steady producer at the sportsbooks, covering the spread in four of five outings including outright wins over Denver and Chicago as home underdogs. However, the team failed to maintain the edge at the sportsbooks after opening as narrow favorites in Thursday’s matchup.

Rookie running back Josh Jacobs has played a pivotal role in the Raiders’ recent success. The 21-year-old out of Alabama has scampered for over 120 yards in three of Oakland’s past four outings, and has spurred the team to victory with two-touchdown performances in three of the Raiders’ four wins this season. Jacobs has been justly rewarded at the sportsbooks, where he is now perched as the favorite to claim NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, sporting average odds of +120.

Can Raiders Maintain Momentum?

However, it remains to be seen whether the Raiders can maintain that momentum in Thursday’s contest. Oakland is winless ATS in its past five after covering in consecutive outings. The Raiders are also a dismal 2-8 SU in their past 10 home dates with divisional rivals, and suffered a 34-3 beating at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in their last appearance on Thursday Night Football with just three days rest, in November of last year.

Picks: Chargers -1 (-114), Under 49 (-109)
