Eagles Reward Fans, Frustrate Bettors with MNF Win

Philadelphia gave its flagging playoff hopes a boost with Monday’s comeback victory, which also put the brakes on a three-game losing streak that threatened to bounce them from the NFL playoff picture.

With the Dallas Cowboys extending their losing streak to three with Thursday’s 31-24 loss in Chicago, Philadelphia now joins the Cowboys atop the NFC East standings at 6-7.

Despite earning the win on Monday night, confidence in the Eagles has been clearly shaken at the sportsbooks.

Despite earning the win on Monday night, confidence in the Eagles has clearly been shaken at the sportsbooks.

Monday’s six-point win as nine-point favorites marked Philadelphia’s fourth-straight ATS loss. The Eagles 0-4 ATS run includes a 37-31 outright loss in Miami as 10.5-point chalk two weeks ago, which followed a pair of subpar defensive performances in home defeats at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Eagles’ Odds Tend to Fade During the Week

Riding a brief two-game SU and ATS win streak, Philadelphia opened as modest 3.5-point home underdogs against the Patriots back in Week 11. The line rapidly swung in New England’s favor, leaving the Eagles at +5 by game time.

The swing away from the Eagles proved even more dramatic a week later at home versus Seattle. Philadelphia opened as three-point chalk before fading to +2.5 by Sunday morning.

In addition to their recent unreliable track record, the Eagles continue to be plagued by injuries. They were so shorthanded on Monday that veteran quarterback Josh McCown was prepared to step into a wide receiver role mid-game.

Redskins Earning Respect at the Sportsbooks

Also working against Philadelphia is the recent resurgence of the Redskins, who return home enjoying their strongest run of an otherwise forgettable campaign. The Redskins kept things close in a 20-15 loss in Green Bay on Sunday, covering as 13.5-point underdogs and extending their current ATS win streak to three games.

Before losing in Green Bay, the Redskins recorded outright victories over Detroit and Carolina as betting underdogs, which put the brakes on a four-game SU slide in which the team tallied just 35 total points. Washington stunned the Lions with a 19-16 victory in Week 12 as 4.5-point underdogs; they defied the oddsmakers again a week later in Carolina, topping the Panthers 29-21 after closing as 10.5-point road dogs.

Expectations remain tempered, though. Washington has lost five straight to the Eagles, covering just once during that stretch. But with the Redskins surging over the past three weeks, and the banged-up Eagles consistently disappointing bettors, expect any movement to favor the Redskins as they seek to spoil Philadelphia’s playoff hopes.
