  • Both Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen grabbed over 100 balls for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2018 season
  • They aren’t expected to accomplish that feat this year as they have been tabbed as a +400 underdog to do it again
  • With the Minnesota Vikings missing the playoffs last season both Diggs and Thielen are sure to be motivated to prove that their gaudy stats weren’t just empty calories

Grabbing over 100 catches in a season is extremely difficult to do. Only a handful of receivers have been able to accomplish that feat in the entire history of the NFL. As small as that list is, it gets even smaller when you take a look at the duos who have been able to get it done on the same team.

As it currently stands, only seven pairs of teammates have been able to get this done. To put that into context to see just how difficult that feat is to accomplish, the NFL is now entering its 100th season this year. In short, accomplishing that goal is absurd, challenging, strenuous and just down right almost impossible to accomplish.

They keyword is, almost.

Just last year former teammates Juju Smith-Schuster and Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers, managed to accomplish that feat with 111 and 106 receptions respectively. Two teammates who also joined the party were Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen of the Minnesota Vikings.

They proved to be a lethal combination with 102 catches for Diggs and Thielen grabbing 113 of his own. With Brown and Smith-Schuster now playing for different teams, it leaves the Vikings duo as the most likely to repeat that feat this season.

According to sportsbooks however, they don’t expect it to happen again.

Although 2018 was the first time that these two have ever crossed over the 100 reception threshold, just one year prior in 2017, Thielen was just nine receptions short of achieving it.

+400 seems like easy money for a pair of teammates who accomplished this very goal just last year, as they will be motivated to do it again. Sure the motivation might be through the roof, but there’s a reason why the odds aren’t stacked in the favor of Diggs and Thielen.

No duo in NFL history has ever been able to accomplish that feat in back-to-back seasons. With that being said, there is reason to believe that they can be the first.

Diggs & Thielen Catches Past Two Seasons

Player & Year Catches
Stefon Diggs 2018 102
Adam Thielen 2018 113
Stefon Diggs 2017 64
Adam Thielen  2017 91

Although 2018 was the first time that these two have ever crossed over the 100 reception threshold. Just one year prior in 2017, Thielen was just nine receptions short of achieving it.

Diggs may have fell way short of the 100 catch mark but it is important to note that he left injured during a Week 5 victory against the Chicago Bears. He was only able to catch one ball before he left because of a groin injury. Diggs was also kept on the sidelines for Weeks 6 and 7. When factoring that in he could have conceivably made it to the 100 reception mark. Before he went down with an injury he was leading the entire league in total yards.

Great receivers such as Odell Beckham Jr, Julio Jones and Andre Hopkins can hold up their half of catching over a hundred balls in any given season but they don’t have a suitable crime partner on the other side of the field who can do the same.

Say what you want about quarterback Kirk Cousins. He has routinely gotten the ball in the hands of his best receivers.

It hasn’t been done before in NFL history but with the game clearly more of a pass-friendly one, there is reason to believe that these two can get it done. With +400 coming back for every $100 you bet, there is serious value to go against the grain and put your money on these two receivers grabbing over a hundred balls during the 2019 NFL season.
