  • The undefeated New England Patriots opened as 13 point favorites against Washington
  • They were quickly bet up to 15.5 point favorites and counting
  • With Sunday’s 24-3 loss in New York, the Redskins have lost outright in 10 of 11 outings

The New England Patriots continued to roll on Sunday, escaping with a 16-10 win over the Buffalo Bills. Now sporting an unblemished 4-0 record, the Patriots have vaulted to 15.5-point favorites in their Week 5 clash with the Washington Redskins.

They opened as 13 point favorites, with the public quickly betting them up to the 15.5 point number. Will the Patriots continue to gain ground, or do the Redskins have any chance to turn things around following their worst start in 38 years?

Here’s a look at the New England Patriots vs Washington Redskins odds & stats ahead of next Sunday’s matchup at FedExField.

Patriots Feasting on Favorable Schedule

The Patriots have taken full advantage of the favorable schedule they have enjoyed through the first month of the season, outscoring opponents by a wide 122-27 margin in their four victories.

Tom Brady and the Patriots offense showed their first signs of weakness all season in this past weekend’s visit to Buffalo, generating just 224 yards of offense, with Brady connecting on just 18 of 39 pass attempts for 150 yards, no scores, and one pick.

However, the New England defense has surrendered just 243 total yards per game through Week 4, and while the Patriots surrendered 375 total yards to Buffalo in Sunday’s win, they effectively contained the Bills attack, making four interceptions on the day while allowing the Bills to march inside the red zone just once all afternoon.

Woeful Redskins Search for Answers

None of that may matter against a woeful Redskins squad that has started the season on a 0-4 run for the first time since 1981, when they opened their schedule with five straight losses.

Following an embarrassing 31-15 loss in Chicago last week on Monday Night Football, things went from bad to worse on Sunday. Washington fell 24-3 to the New York Giants as slim three point road underdogs, and have now posted just one SU win 11 outings.

Toothless Washington Offense Hobbled by Injuries

With starting QB Case Keenum failing to kickstart the Redskins offense in New York, head coach Jay Gruden turned to rookie passer Dwayne Haskins, with little success.

Washington’s 176 yards of total offense against New York on Sunday marks the second time in five regular-season outings that they failed to rack up over 200 total yards. And as bad as the Redskins attack has been, the defense has been even worse.

With rookie pivot Daniel Jones leading the attack, the Giants walked all over Washington, piling up 389 yards and keeping the Redskins defense on the field for over 36 minutes.

In addition, the Redskins have been hobbled by injuries. Tight end Jordan Reed and wide receiver Terry McLaurin both missed last weekend’s game due to injury, and cornerback Josh Norman was briefly forced to leave Sunday’s game with a knee injury that will be closely watched this week. Concerns also linger about the health of Keenum, who was reportedly nursing a foot injury before Sunday’s game.

Patriots Have Dominated in Recent Dates With ‘Skins

None of this bodes well for the Redskins in next week’s date with the defending Super Bowl champions. The Patriots have defeated Washington in three straight meetings since 2007, including a pair of wins as heavy double-digit chalk in which they rewarded sports bettors with ATS wins.

Despite failing to cover in their past two outings, the Patriots remain a reliable bet when pegged as double-digit favorites, winning outright in 10 straight and covering in eight of those contests, and will likely see the spread continue to move in their favor as they prepare to visit a Redskins squad that will be listed as a double-digit home underdog for the first time since October 1995.
