Lance Steps Into Void

Lance took over as the 49ers’ primary quarterback at the beginning of the second half Sunday for Garoppolo with the score tied at 7-7. Lance could start this week as Garoppolo’s strained right calf might cause him to miss Sunday’s divisional road game against the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals.

Prior to Sunday, Lance had played just seven snaps in the 49ers’ first three games as a change-of-pace QB. Thrust into action against the Seahawks, Lance showed flashes of brilliance but had an uneven performance overall.

The third overall pick in this year’s draft from North Dakota State completed 9 of 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 41 yards on seven carries.

Lance’s best moment came when took advantage of blown coverage to connect with Deebo Samuel on a 76-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. That drew the 49ers within 21-14.

The duo connected on an 8-yard scoring pass with 1:20 left to cut the deficit to 28-21. The Seahawks then ran out the clock.

Opportunity Knocks

The 49ers traded three first-round picks so they could move up to No. 3 overall in this year’s draft to select.

Coach Kyle Shanahan staged a competition between the incumbent Garoppolo and Lance for the starting QB job during training camp. As expected, though, Garoppolo began the season as QB1.

However, it seemed only a matter of time before Lance got the bulk of the snaps. Garoppolo has a long injury history, and this marks the fourth time in the five years in which he has begun a season as a starting quarterback that he has been hurt within the first four weeks.

Garoppolo went down with a high ankle sprain in Week 2 last season and missed two games. He then sat out the final eight games of 2020 after reinjuring the ankle.

How long the calf injury will keep Garoppolo out remains to be seen but he said after Sunday’s game that it would likely be “a couple of weeks.”

Jones Solidifies Top Spot

The 49ers’ decision on draft day reportedly came down to Lance or Jones. Ironically, Jones is the OROY favorite.

Though the Patriots lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-17 on Sunday night in Tom Brady’s Foxborough homecoming, Jones strengthened his candidacy. He completed 31 of 40 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Since beating out incumbent Cam Newton for the starting job in training camp, Jones has completed 70.0% of his passes for 1,012 in four games with four TDs and four picks.

Is Lance Worth Betting?

It certainly seems that Lance is going to get the opportunity to show why the 49ers gave up so much of their future to trade for him. While he was erratic in his first extended action Sunday, Lance certainly flashed his talent at times.

Now would be the time to jump on Lance at +550 before the odds go even lower.
