Updated Stanley Cup Odds for all 32 Teams Ahead of Opening Night
- It’s the defending champion Colorado Avalanche who are the +400 favorites to win the 2022-23 Stanley Cup
- The Tampa Bay Lightning (2020-21, 2021-22) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2015-16, 2016-17) both repeated as champions over the past seven NHL seasons
- Nine teams are being given opening Stanley Cup odds of +1700 or shorter
For the longest time, NHL teams just didn’t repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Between 1989-2015, only the Pittsburgh Penguins (1990-91, 1991-92) and Detroit Red Wings (1996-97, 1997-98) were able to win back-to-back titles.
Recently, there’s been some repetition in repeating. The Penguins did it again in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Then the Tampa Bay Lightning won successive Stanley Cups in 2020-21 and 2021-22.
Does that mean wagering on the reigning champion Colorado Avalanche to win again this season would be a wise play? Oddsmakers are favoring it to happen.
The Avalanche are the +400 favorites in the Stanley Cup odds as the NHL regular season is launching.

The Lightning, who’ve played in the past three Stanley Cup finals, are the co-third betting choice at +1100.
Avalanche A Tough Play
The hardest part of repeating in a salary cap league is keeping the band together. Hard up against the cap, Colorado was forced to make difficult choices. The Avalanche allowed #1 goalie Darcy Kuemper and #2 center Nazem Kadri to walk away via free agency.

They’re going with career backups Alexandar Georgiev and Pavel Francouz between the pipes. Colorado didn’t really bring in a suitable replacement for Kadri’s 28 goals and 87 points.
On top of that, injuries are already playing havoc with the Colorado roster. Role players Darren Helm and Andrei Nichushkin are beginning the season on IR, as is captain Gabriel Landeskog.
Leafs Need To Win A Series First
On paper, there’s certainly a lot to like about the Toronto Maple Leafs (+1000). Rocket Richard Trophy favorite Auston Matthews scored 60 goals last season. There’s plenty of scoring support from Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares.
A great regular season reason, Toronto is always a safe bet on the over in the NHL win totals. But the fact of the matter is that the Leafs haven’t won a playoff series since 2004. It’s rare for a team to go from zero wins to Cup champs in the same season.

Likewise, the Carolina Hurricanes (+1100) seem to have all the necessary parts to win a Cup. They just haven’t been able to piece it together. The latest last piece of the puzzle to arrive is defenseman Brett Burns, a Norris Trophy winner.
It just seems like pure folly to expect that Tampa Bay could get to a fourth successive Cup final. Like Colorado, the Lightning were forced to shed salary in the summer. And playing all those games three years in a row has to take a physical toll.
Rangers Are Ready To Take Next Step
It’s been a long time since the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1993-94. However, much like that team, the current version of the Rangers contains all the elements generally present on a Stanley Cup-winning roster.
Start in goal, where Igor Shesterkin is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner and again favored in the Vezina Trophy odds. In Adam Fox, they have a Norris Trophy winner to anchor their blue line.

Offense is available in bunches. Artemi Panarin collected 96 points, among four players who were over 70 points last season. Chris Kreider netted a career-high 52 goals. Depth of scoring is also a factor. Eight players went over 30 points and also connected for double digits in goals.
