  • Bernie Sanders has struggled to stop Joe Biden’s momentum in the race to be the Democratic Party nominee
  • Joe Biden currently has 889 delegates while Bernie Sanders has 739
  • With Florida, Illinois, Arizona, and Ohio voting on Tuesday, can Sanders turn the tide?

After the latest Democratic Primary debate, the conversation has come up as to when Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will drop out of the race.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is a huge favorite in the odds to win the Democratic nomination and Sanders doesn’t seem to have a path to victory.

Is he going to drop out after the next round of primaries on March 17th?

Odds Bernie Sanders Drops Out by Mar. 20th

Outcome Odds
Yes +160
No -215

Odds taken Mar. 16.

Biden Wins Sunday’s Debate

Sanders’ path to the nomination was about as narrow as it gets entering Sunday’s debate. He got smoked on Super Tuesday by Biden and then really needed to win Michigan to spark a turnaround. That didn’t happen either. It really felt like Sunday’s debate was his last chance to make a case and turn the tide.

Sanders has long been soft and cuddly in the debates, which is definitely one strategy to take if you want to keep your friends. However, he really needed to take the gloves off and go after Biden on Sunday on healthcare, his promises to cut social security, and many other things.

Instead, he was gentle and ended up losing.

Biden landed one of the lines of the night saying that people want “results, not a revolution”. He looked cool, calm and, in a word, presidential. To those who were worried he might struggle in a one-on-one debate, he held up well.

Where Does Sanders Go From Here?

A big issue for Sanders is that he doesn’t really have a path to the nomination in terms of picking up the necessary number of delegates. The upcoming primaries aren’t going to be very friendly to him, according to the polls.

Taking a look at Florida, Ohio and Arizona — three of the four states with primaries tomorrow — Biden leads by 17 points or more in each of the latest polls out of those states. Biden currently has a 150-delegate lead and, when you start to do the math, there really isn’t anyway that Sanders can make up the gap.

Even the national polls show Sanders getting crushed as Biden is +29 for the Democratic Nomination and +9 over Trump as well. The 2020 Democratic nomination odds show the same story. Sanders’ case is withering away by the day.

Will Sanders Drop Out Before March 20th?

The prop that we’re looking at today is whether or not Sanders drops out this week. This week, Arizona, Florida, Illinois and Ohio vote on Tuesday and then from there, we really don’t have much action until Puerto Rico on March 29th and then Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming on April 4th.

At this point, I actually would bet on ‘Yes’ as I expect Sanders to get cleaned out on Tuesday and for him to see the writing on the wall after that. It’s been an incredible turnaround for him, going from the surefire favorite to not even having a shot, but that’s where we are and he has no path forward.
