  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Son Heung-Min have stormed to the top of the Premier League goalscoring race with six goals each
  • Mohamed Salah remains favored to claim this season’s Golden Boot, but Jamie Vardy’s fast start has positioned him as a solid value bet
  • We’ve got you covered with all the odds and trends behind the race for this season’s EPL Golden Boot

It has been a breakthrough season for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has played a key role in Everton FC’s perfect 4-0-0 start with a league-leading six goals, and now sits second on the odds to emerge as the Premier League’s top goalscorer this season as a +550 bet.

Calvert-Lewin is not the only striker enjoying a fast start. Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-Min joins Calvert-Lewin at the top of the goalscoring stats with six markers through his first four outings, lifting the South Korean star to a +1000 bet. But with the Toffees and Spurs facing a huge challenge to maintain their current torrid pace, can Calvert-Lewin and Son maintain their unfamiliar position as scoring leaders.

Calvert-Lewin Enjoying Breakthrough

Calvert-Lewin has taken enormous steps over the past year. The 23-year-old looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough prior to the league shut down in March, potting eight goals over a 10-match stretch that started on Boxing Day. The talented Englishman fell flat in the Premier League’s return to action over the summer, failing to score in his final ten outings, and opened the new season lagging as a +7300 bet to win the scoring race.

But Calvert-Lewin is proving that last season’s breakthrough was no fluke, potting Everton’s first goal in each of the club’s five outings across all competitions. And in addition to his six goals in league play, Calvert-Lewin also potted three goals in the club’s 4-1 win over West Ham United in League Cup play a week ago.

The Toffees have made the most of a favorable schedule to open the new season. Since escaping with a season-opening 1-0 win over the Spurs, Everton has feasted on inferior opponents, posting wins over recently promoted West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace, and Brighton. However, the competition will soon stiffen dramatically, with dates with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester City, Arsenal, and Manchester City all on the schedule between now and the New Year. In addition, it remains to be seen whether Calvert-Lewin can maintain the level of consistent play that eluded him down the stretch last season.

Son Unlikely to Maintain Torrid Pace

Listed as a +8000 bet in the Premier League top scorer odds to start the season, Son faces a similar challenge in Tottenham. The Spurs are undefeated in three outings since falling to Everton, capped by a 6-1 rout of the Red Devils this past weekend. And while Son’s fast start has lifted the Spurs offense, his current goalscoring frenzy is more likely to be an aberration.

Now in his 12th season of top-flight European soccer, and his sixth in the Premier League, it is unlikely that Son is on the verge of becoming a prolific scorer at 28 years old. While he has reached double digits in goals in each of the past four years, Son has never scored more than 14 goals in a season, a feat he achieved back in 2016/2017. Indeed, Son’s six goals have come over just two matches, with his total padded by a four-goal performance in Tottenham’s 5-2 rout of Southampton two weeks ago.

Salah, Vardy in the Hunt

And while both Calvert-Lewin and Son’s fast starts are welcome by their respective clubs, they are far from running away with the goalscoring race. Knotted with reigning Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy at five goals, Mohamed Salah continues to lead the way in the Golden Boot odds as a +450 favorite. The Egyptian star has turned in a pair of multi-goal performances and is currently on pace to challenge his career-high of 32 goals that earned him Golden Boot honors in 2018.

Currently listed at an attractive +900, Vardy has maintained the steady pace that earned him his first career Golden Boot last season, bolstering his goal total with a hat trick in the Foxes’ stunning 5-2 rout of Manchester City. Overall, Vardy has tallied 11 goals in his past 14 EPL matches. And with this youthful Leicester squad showing every indication that they are poised to challenge for at least a spot among the top four, the 33-year-old provides solid value to claim back-to-back goal-scoring titles.

Best Bet: Jamie Vardy (+900)
