Watford are a club accustomed to managerial change. Few have been as surprising, or as hard to understand, as the decision to relieve Nigel Pearson of his duties earlier this month, however. Hayden Mullins has taken over as caretaker for the end of the 2019-20 Premier League season – Watford head into the final round of fixtures as one of the relegation betting favorites.

Arsenal are the Hornets’ final opponent on the last day of the season. Mikel Arteta’s side have nothing to play for, but they are favored for victory over Watford at the Emirates.

Hornets Roll The Dice

Sacking Pearson was a gamble. The defeat to West Ham left Watford up against it, but Pearson had done a good job, winning seven and drawing five of his 22 matches in charge. There were victories over Manchester United, Liverpool and Wolves.

Hiring Mullins was just hope more than expectation. The last two matches, against Manchester City and Arsenal, were not games they were expected to win. A heavy defeat to City was unsurprising. Whether Pearson was manager or not, their chances were not great against an Arsenal side that only recently beat City and Liverpool in the space of a few days.

This is a Watford team that has underachieved by preseason expectation and their expected numbers. Understat’s expected points have them comfortably avoiding the drop, but poor finishing has cost them so far this season. Only Crystal Palace and Norwich have scored fewer Premier League goals this season.

Strong Gunners Expected

With a week before the FA Cup final, Arteta will likely name a strong side for the visit of Watford. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette should both start. Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos, the midfield duo that starred in their semi-final win against Manchester City, are expected to be the midfield pairing once again, matching up with Nathaniel Chalobah, Will Hughes and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Arsenal’s record for the season remains underwhelming. They have won just one of their last four. The performance in defeat to Aston Villa last time out will have disappointed Arteta, and it makes it trickier to predict which Arsenal we will see on Sunday.

Home Win The Way To Go

There aren’t many places up for grabs for Arsenal’s cup final XI. After such a poor outing against Villa, however, the Gunners will be keen to bounce back and regain some form.

Watford have the players, including former Arsenal man Danny Welbeck, to pose a threat. Arteta’s side have improved markedly at the back in recent weeks, though, and Watford’s last two performances make it hard to back them here.

There’s unpredictability given the circumstances the two teams find themselves in. Watford avoiding defeat wouldn’t be the biggest shock of the season, but Arsenal to win is the best bet here considering what we saw from Watford against City and West Ham.
