Surprise Defeat for Bayern
Bayern’s apparent invincibility took a massive hit at the weekend when, on Matchday 2 of the new Bundesliga season, they were soundly beaten in Hoffenheim. There was some part-mitigation in the form of a heavy early-season workload for the Bavarians, but no-one predicted the 4-1 humbling they suffered in the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, and it was a weakened Bayern team that took the field in Hoffenheim with record-breaking striker Robert Lewandowski starting the game on the bench.
Bayern’s loss in Hoffenheim ended their outstanding 32-game unbeaten run – one that goes all the way back to December 2019 – during which they won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.
Lewandowski Back for Bayern
Manager Hansi Flick was quick to point out the need to rotate his squad – hence Lewandowski being a substitute – with the Hoffenheim game coming just three days after them being taken to extra-time by Sevilla in the European Super Cup, and he’ll be keen this was merely a blip and his team gets back to winning ways as soon as possible.
🗣️ #Flick: "Dortmund have a fantastic, young side and they also have experience in their ranks. They play attractive, offensive football, which I like. This will be a test against one of Germany's best. This game will help to develop us."#FCBBVB pic.twitter.com/tEUG1Fkfiz

Interestingly, BVB also go into Sunday’s game off the back of a defeat after surprisingly losing 2-0 in Augsburg at the weekend. Despite having 80 percent of possession in the match, Dortmund came unstuck courtesy of a goal either side of half-time, with some sterling defending from the hosts sufficient for a hard-earned shut-out and win.
The Kings of German Soccer
While BVB have been Bayern’s biggest rivals for over a decade now, rarely have they been able to regularly go toe-to-toe with them, and only on odd occasions have they been able to come out on top.

Bayern remain the Kings of German football, but ahead of this BVB will definitely look back to last season’s Super Cup, which was one of their good days in this ongoing battle. On the day, goals from Paco Alcacer and Jadon Sancho were enough to send the trophy back to Dortmund – the sixth time they had lifted the trophy – and a win this week would pull them level with Bayern, who have won it seven times.

Bad News for BVB
The bad news for BVB is that Lewandowski is almost certain to be recalled by Hansi Flick in place of Joshua Zirkzee, and will be looking to add to his DFL-Supercup record tally of five goals. Champions League final match-winner Kingsley Coman is also expected to be recalled after new-signing Leroy Sane – who has started all three matches for Bayern so far – picked up a knock at the weekend.
No-one predicted the 4-1 humbling they suffered in the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, but it was a weakened Bayern team that took the field in Hoffenheim
Leon Goretzka and Alphonso Davies are also expected to be fit to start against Dortmund after both missing the Hoffenheim game through injury.
Brandt and Reus Back for BVB
Dortmund, like Bayern, were without a few key players last weekend, and it’s likely that Julian Brandt and Marco Reus – both of whom missed the Augsburg game – will be available for Wednesday; both with the ability to provide the ammunition for Sancho and Erling Braut Haaland in the BVB attack. And with Lukasz Piszczek and Dan-Axel Zagadou still missing through injury, it looks likely that Manuel Akanji will line up in defense alongside Mats Hummels and Emre Can.

Both Looking for a Reaction
Last season, Bayern were triumphant in both Bundesliga games between these two, but with both teams stung from defeats last weekend, it’s who reacts the best who will win this trophy. Neither team is used to losing two games on the spin but something has to give, and Flick’s ability to be able to bring in a goalscorer of Lewandowski’s quality tilts the balance in Bayern’s favor. There’s little value in the straight Bayern win, but there is in trying to predict the scoreline, with Bayern’s recent success in this fixture the best guide.
Pick: Bayern to win 3-1 (+900)
