The Bundesliga has been the center of soccer attention in recent weeks. While that might be about to change, there’s still a huge amount to play for. As Borussia Dortmund welcome Mainz on Wednesday, the away side are looking to increase their cushion over the bottom three, while Dortmund are hoping to extend a three-match winning streak.
Dortmund saw their title hopes quickly disappear after the league’s resumption, but they will be keen to retain second place ahead of RB Leipzig, who are only four points behind them as it stands and could close the gap on Wednesday.

Previous Clashes
A friendly in January saw Mainz run out as victors, but that shouldn’t take on too much importance for bettors. Competitive fixtures are much more relevant ahead of this one, and Dortmund have unsurprisingly dominated Mainz in recent years, including a 4-0 thumping at Opel Arena back in December. The last time they met in Dortmund, BVB took all three points thanks to a 2-1 win following a Jadon Sancho brace.
Sancho, who scored and assisted in the 4-0 win earlier this season, will be a key figure again on Wednesday. He has contributed to 33 Bundesliga goals this season – only Robert Lewandowski and Timo Werner have scored more, and only Thomas Muller has been credited with more assists. The England international is -125 to get on the scoresheet on Wednesday.
Erling Haaland returned from injury at the weekend and netted the winner. The Norwegian phenom ranks second in the league in non-penalty expected goals per 90 (of players who’ve played over 500 minutes). Mainz have kept just one clean sheet since the league restarted and will struggle to contain Dortmund’s attacking prowess, just as they did in the reverse fixture.
Haaland to score two or more at +200 is a tempting bet, a feat he’s achieved four times since he signed for Dortmund.

Struggling Mainz
It’s been a challenging season for Mainz. They haven’t had back-to-back wins since the start of December, and with Dortmund, Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen as their final three matches, they are at serious relegation threat. Die Nullfünfer haven’t picked up any points against the top six this season and have faced some heavy defeats along the way.
The stats make ugly reading. The shot totals are one positive, ranking seventh in the league in shots per match, but they are not creating many shots of good quality. They are shooting slightly more often than Dortmund, but Wednesday’s hosts have registered almost 18 more non-penalty expected goals.
It’s a mismatch. Dortmund are the far superior side, and despite scoring twice across their last two matches, could win this by several goals. An emphatic home win is probable.
Pick: Dortmund to win, over 3.5 total goals (+112)
