Bournemouth Still Struggling

For Bournemouth, the season has gradually faded away from being automatic promotion hopefuls to now being seventh and outside the playoff places.  A five-year run in the Premier League came to an end last season when, despite a final-day win, they finished 18th and so dropped into the second tier. As a result, in the summer they sacked manager Eddie Howe, who had overseen the club’s meteoric rise from the fourth tier to top level of English soccer, and replaced him with his former assistant, Jason Tindall.

But, despite a good start to the season, which included a win over the runaway leaders Norwich City, Tindall struggled to maintain that momentum and results started to fall away for the Cherries. As a result, he too followed Howe out of the club when he was sacked in early February after a run of one win in eight.

Last Chance Saloon for Cherries

Former Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate was appointed to replace Tindall but he too has struggled – just two wins to his name to date – and a home defeat at the weekend by fellow playoff hopefuls Barnsley has left the Cherries with a five-point gap between themselves and the top six.

Defeat here by Swansea could potentially be a fatal blow to Bournemouth’s playoff hopes, so it is time for the Cherries’ big names to step up and set the scene for a final ten-game charge for the playoff places.

Swansea Finding a Way

Swansea, in stark contrast to Bournemouth, has the scent of the Premier League in their nostrils and has recently acquired a very handy knack of finding ways to win tight games. A run of seven wins in their last ten has given Steve Cooper’s men momentum at a time when they need it most as their two main rivals for the second automatic promotion place – Watford and Brentford – both also hit winning runs.

The Swans have courted controversy in the last couple of weeks with two injury-time penalties from Andre Ayew earning them wins over Stoke City and Middlesbrough. And then at the weekend, they won away at Luton thanks to an early Connor Hourihane goal and by then surviving a couple of very valid penalty appeals. It is fair to say the Swans have been maintaining their challenge by not playing at their best, so an away game at the Vitality will be a real test of their credentials.

Bournemouth vs Swansea Best Bet

With Bournemouth in desperate need of a win in order to reignite their promotion challenge ahead of the run-in, there is real pressure on Woodgate’s men to deliver on Tuesday night and much will depend on how the Cherries’ big names respond to that extra intensity. They have enough quality in their squad to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the division when it all clicks.

The Swans too though are playing under enormous pressure with the prize of automatic promotion so close but yet so far, and will be aware that their recent habit of winning but playing poorly cannot go on forever.

On that basis, with the Cherries still in plus-money the value here, for me, is with the home win.

Picks: Bournemouth to win (+112)
