With most league action set to begin this weekend, the UEFA Super Cup will need to be settled on Wednesday ahead of a new domestic season. The competition will see Champions League winners, Chelsea, battle it out with Europa League title-holders, Villarreal. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

This will be the Blues’ fifth appearance in the Super Cup, but they’ve captured the ultimate prize just once. The Yellow Submarine, on the other hand, will be making its debut in the one-off fixture.

This is also the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

Blues Looking to Start Off With a Bang

After lifting the Champions League trophy in Porto just over two months ago, Chelsea will now have the chance to win their first piece of silverware ahead of a brand new Premier League and European campaign. The Blues have secured the signature of Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, who is set to be unveiled as a Chelsea player in the coming days. The club will be hoping the €115 million man will be available to feature on Wednesday after flying to London on Monday night.

Thomas Tuchel will probably keep a lot of his regulars who had long summers out of the starting XI for this game. Mason Mount, Jorginho, Thiago Silva, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Cesar Azpilicueta are all available but some may come on as substitutes. However, James and Chilwell, who played limited minutes with England at Euro 2020, should get the nod as Chelsea’s wing-backs.

The pre-season was the ultimate confidence booster for the Blues. They went unbeaten in four matches, beating Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Peterborough while playing to a 2-2 draw with Spurs most recently.  Hakim Ziyech impressed against their North London rivals, netting a brace.

Chelsea’s last two appearances in the UEFA Super Cup have seen them lose in penalties in 2013 and 2019. In fact, their lone trophy in the match was in 1998, when the side beat Real Madrid. Needless to say, it’s a long time coming. It’s important to note that Tuchel has never lost to Spanish opposition in his managerial career though, going 4-4-0.

Will Poor Pre-Season Form Hurt Villarreal?

It’s hard to take a lot from pre-season fixtures because clubs are mostly just getting into a groove, but Unai Emery’s men weren’t great by any means. The Yellow Submarine failed to win once in six games, tying the likes of Lyon, Leeds, and La Liga counterparts Levante. They also lost to Leicester City, Valencia, and Marseille in the process.

Villarreal will be missing a key figure in their attack on Wednesday, with winger Samuel Chukwueze still battling a hamstring injury. Talisman Gerard Moreno, who competed for Spain at Euro 2020, should be available to lead the line after suiting up against Leeds.

The Super Cup is extremely unfamiliar territory for Emery’s squad, but they’ve gone 16-8-0 against non-Spanish opponents in their last 24 matches. Villarreal finds themselves in Belfast following a historic 11-10 spot-kicks victory over Manchester United in the Europa final in May.

After finishing in seventh place in La Liga last term, their triumph in Poland means they will feature in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2011/12. Having already beaten a Premier League giant on the big stage, Villarreal will be looking to replicate that performance versus the kings of Europe. But, it will not be an easy task.

Chelsea vs Villarreal Prediction

Despite Chelsea’s lackluster form in the Super Cup, I believe you’ll see them show up ready to roll here. Even with a squad that isn’t quite at full strength, the Blues’ pre-season success is a reason to side with them. Villarreal, however, have looked very poor prior to Wednesday’s encounter and I frankly don’t expect them to beat the Champions League holders.

Tuchel will continue his dominance of La Liga oppositions.

Pick: Chelsea -130
