Dream Start for Miami in Messi’s Debut

Inter Miami and Messi already got their Leagues Cup campaign started on Friday and what a start it was.

Coming into the tournament, Miami hadn’t won in 11 games in MLS play. And when their game against Cruz Azul got started Friday it looked like that streak may continue. With Messi and Sergio Busquets on the bench to start, it actually looked like there was a chance Cruz Azul may run Miami off the pitch before the new star additions even touched the field.

But against the run of play, Robert Taylor would give the Herons the lead just before halftime in the 44′ minute.

It didn’t take long into the second half for Tata Martino to give the fans what they were waiting for as he made a triple substitution in the 54′ minute to bring on Messi, Busquets and Martinez.

However, it was Cruz Azul who scored just minutes later in the 65′ to draw level at 1-1. Which is how the game looked like it may end. That is, until Messi stepped up to take a free kick in stoppage time from about 25 yards out. And Messi did, what Messi has done throughout his career, creating another iconic goal, and this time one of the most memorable goals in MLS’s history. His free kick in the 94′ minute soared over the Cruz Azul wall and over the outstretched arms of keeper Andrés Gudiño into the top left corner. That gave Miami the lead on basically the last play of the game and put them atop Leagues Cup Group J.

Miami Look to Build Winning Streak

Will that win spark some momentum for the Herons? They have a chance to string together a winning streak being back at home on Tuesday. As bad as Miami has been this season at 5-3-14, while being outscored 36-22, at DRV PNK stadium they have collected four of their five wins this season. They have scored in 9/11 home games this season in league play as well.

Miami’s xG of 20.9 is last in MLS. But Martinez and Campana are very capable scorers and Martinez was already getting himself into scoring positions once Messi got on the field Friday. Now you add in Messi, for likely longer than the last half hour of the game, and it’s hard to not imagine the Herons getting their share of scoring opportunities

Atlanta United’s Almada to Face Argentine Teammate

Messi will be going up against this Argentine and World Cup-winning teammate Almada here, which should set up an incredible battle in the midfield.

Almada will need to create chances for Atlanta, as it’s hard to not see Miami getting on the scoresheet in the Inter Miami vs Atlanta United picks. As great as the Five Stripes have been offensively, scoring 42 goals this season, tied for third overall, they’ve also conceded 39 goals. Of the current 18 playoff teams, that is easily the most, with DC and RSL each conceding 34 being the next closest.

Atlanta will want to reverse their form in Leagues Cup. They’ve lost two straight in MLS by 2-1 scorelines and have just three wins in their past 11.

They’ve struggled on the road at just 2-5-5 while being outscored 24-15, conceding in 9/12 road games.

Inter Miami vs Atlanta United Lineups and Injuries

Fullback Ian Fray was injured for Miami on Friday with his third ACL injury. Star striker Giorgos Giakoumakis, who had been injured, played a limited role in Atlanta’s last game and took part in the MLS All-Star game so should be available.

Inter Miami Projected Lineup: Callender; Yedlin, Miller, Kryvtsov, McVey; Cremaschi, Arroyo, Ruiz; Robinson, Campana, Taylor

Injuries & absences: Mota, Gregore, Negri, Jean, Fray

Atlanta United Projected Lineup: Guzan; Abram, Sanchez, Hernandez; Wiley, Sejdic, Sosa, Lennon; Almada, Choi; Giakoumakis

Injuries & absences: None

Inter Miami vs Atlanta United Prediction

We’ve seen this matchup and at this venue already this season when Miami won 2-1 at DRV PNK in May.

In the history of this matchup home teams are 6-3-1, with the home team winning both games last season. At least two goals have been scored in eight of those ten meetings.

Both teams have seen more games go Over versus Under this season, but more so when it comes to Atlanta. The Five Stripes are 17-7 to Over 2.5 totals. Their games average the tied-most (CLB) GPG at 3.4. Atlanta road games have also gone Over 2.5 at one of the highest rates at 8-4. The 3.3 GPG in their road matches is the highest in MLS.

Miami games have gone Over 2.5 at just a 12-10 clip. Their xGA of 34.4 is 25th and the 118 shots on target they’ve allowed is 28th.

I don’t trust either team’s defense. But both teams now have star midfielders and with the return from injury of Giakoumakis who has ten goals for Atlanta, both have more than capable strikers. Atlanta have put the fifth-most shots on target this season and owns the eighth-best xG.

This looks like an exciting matchup where both teams get on the scoresheet and someone gets at least a second.
